DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Christian life is sustained not merely by present experiences but also by remembering God's faithfulness in the past. The psalmist deliberately chose to recall God's mighty acts when discouragement threatened to overwhelm him. Remembering God's works renews faith, restores hope, strengthens patience, and gives confidence for future victories.

In 3 John 1:10, the Apostle John exposed the evil deeds of Diotrephes because his works opposed God's kingdom. This teaches us that every deed is remembered before God, whether righteous or evil. While the wicked may boast of their sinful works for a season, God's people are commanded to remember, meditate upon, and proclaim His righteous acts.

God has healed, delivered, provided, protected, forgiven, restored, promoted, and preserved His children throughout history. Israel was repeatedly instructed never to forget how God brought them out of Egypt because forgetfulness often leads to pride, unbelief, compromise, and disobedience.

Many believers become discouraged because they focus more on present challenges than on previous victories. When David faced Goliath, he first remembered God's help against the lion and the bear (1 Samuel 17:34-37). His memory of God's faithfulness became the foundation of fresh courage.

Remembering God's deeds is more than mental recollection. It involves thanksgiving, testimony, worship, obedience, and renewed confidence. Every testimony strengthens both the one who shares it and those who hear it.

Never allow temporary difficulties to erase permanent testimonies. The God who worked yesterday remains the same today and forever.

Before confronting Goliath, David remembered how God delivered him from both the lion and the bear. Those memories produced confidence for an even greater battle.

2. Israel Forgot God's Wonders

Despite witnessing miracles in Egypt and at the Red Sea, many Israelites forgot God's mighty acts and continually complained.

Merciful Father, I confess that I have often focused on my challenges more than Your faithfulness. Forgive me for every complaint, every doubt, every act of unbelief, and every moment I failed to acknowledge Your goodness. LIVING ACCOUNTABLY BEFORE CHRIST

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

INTRODUCTION

This verse reminds every believer that our words, attitudes, actions, and motives are known by God and will be brought into account. The Apostle John was not threatening revenge; rather, he was emphasizing godly accountability and the need for correction within the body of Christ. Likewise, Jesus Christ will return and every believer shall give an account of his or her life.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The words "Therefore, if I come" carry a solemn warning. John intended to confront Diotrephes because of his pride, selfish ambition, malicious speech, rejection of faithful brethren, and abuse of authority. Rather than serving God's people, Diotrephes exalted himself.

Many today profess Christ but desire prominence instead of servanthood. Some destroy reputations with gossip, hinder God's work through jealousy, reject genuine servants of God, and manipulate others for personal gain. God sees every hidden motive.

Scripture consistently teaches that no believer is exempt from accountability. Jesus declared that every idle word shall be judged (Matthew 12:36). Paul reminds believers that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10). Our positions, titles, achievements, and popularity cannot replace genuine holiness.

The question is not whether Christ will come, but whether we are ready when He comes. The Christian life demands daily self-examination, humility, repentance, forgiveness, obedience, and faithful service.

Instead of living for applause from men, live for God's approval. Instead of seeking recognition, seek righteousness. Instead of promoting yourself, promote Christ. The Lord is looking for faithful servants whose lives reflect His character.

May your life become one that welcomes Christ's coming with confidence rather than fear.

A principal informed teachers that he would visit every classroom unexpectedly. Some teachers diligently prepared every day, while others relaxed, assuming he would not come soon. When he finally arrived, the prepared teachers were commended while the careless ones were corrected.

2. The Faithful Gatekeeper

A gatekeeper faithfully watched over his master's estate every day. Others mocked his seriousness because the master delayed returning. One unexpected evening, the master arrived and found him faithfully doing his duty. He was promoted above all the others.

Father, I acknowledge that You know every hidden motive, every careless word, every selfish action, and every neglected responsibility in my life. I can hide nothing from You. Wash me completely by the blood of Jesus. Remove every trace of pride, rebellion, hypocrisy, bitterness, envy, and spiritual complacency. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.

BEWARE OF THE SPIRIT OF DIOTREPHES

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

"I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not." - 3 John 1:9 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

Diotrephes is remembered in Scripture not for his achievements, but for his pride, self-exaltation, and opposition to godly authority. His life is a warning that religious activity without humility can become destructive. The "spirit of Diotrephes" is an attitude that seeks prominence instead of service, control instead of submission, recognition instead of God's glory, and personal ambition instead of kingdom advancement.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The spirit of Diotrephes is one of the most dangerous spiritual diseases that can quietly enter the life of a believer, church leader, worker, business executive, or even a family head. John described Diotrephes as one who "loveth to have the preeminence." His greatest desire was not to glorify Christ but to occupy the highest position.

This spirit is characterized by pride, arrogance, rejection of correction, abuse of authority, selfish ambition, slander, division, and refusal to receive God's servants. Such people often appear spiritual outwardly but inwardly are driven by a desire for control and recognition.

Jesus taught the exact opposite. He humbled Himself, washed His disciples' feet, and declared that whoever desires to be greatest must become the servant of all (Mark 10:43-45).

The spirit of Diotrephes can manifest in different areas:

• Refusing correction.
• Always wanting personal recognition.
• Jealousy toward gifted people.
• Fighting genuine ministers of God.
• Destroying unity.
• Using influence to suppress others.
• Refusing accountability.
• Promoting self instead of Christ.
• Gossip and character assassination.
• Seeking titles rather than service.

God promotes humble people but resists the proud (James 4:6). Every believer must constantly examine his or her heart so that the spirit of Diotrephes does not replace the Spirit of Christ.

A tall tower stood in the middle of a city boasting that it reached the clouds. During a violent storm, the tower collapsed because its foundation was weak. Nearby stood a humble cottage built upon solid rock. Though small, it survived.

2. The Empty Chair

In a church meeting, one leader insisted on occupying the highest seat every week. Eventually, people admired his position but not his character. Another servant quietly arranged chairs, welcomed visitors, and prayed faithfully. Years later, God elevated the humble servant while the proud leader lost influence.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Examine your heart honestly. Have you sought recognition more than righteousness? Have you resisted correction, criticized others, or desired to control people? Today, Jesus calls you to lay down pride and put on humility.

Father, I confess every hidden pride, selfish ambition, jealousy, stubbornness, and desire for recognition. Forgive every attitude that resembles Diotrephes. Destroy every root of arrogance within me and create in me a humble heart that reflects Christ.

Lord Jesus Christ, I repent of every manifestation of pride in my life. Wash me with Your precious blood. Remove every spirit of self-exaltation. Fill me with Your humility, gentleness, wisdom, and love. Let my life glorify You alone. Amen.

The spirit of Diotrephes seeks to exalt self, but the Spirit of Christ exalts God. Pride may gain temporary influence, but humility secures eternal honour. DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The apostle John expressed deep concern over a man named Diotrephes, who loved prominence more than truth. His desire to be first caused him to reject apostolic authority, refuse faithful brethren, spread malicious words, and discourage others from receiving God's servants (3 John 1:9–10).

The phrase "receiveth us not" was not merely about refusing hospitality. It revealed a heart that rejected God's authority, resisted correction, and exalted personal ambition above Christ. Diotrephes wanted influence without submission, leadership without humility, and recognition without accountability.

Many people today unknowingly develop the spirit of Diotrephes. They reject correction, despise spiritual authority, refuse sound biblical teaching, isolate themselves from genuine fellowship, and seek personal glory rather than God's glory. Such attitudes hinder spiritual growth and create division within Christ's body.

God calls every believer to cultivate humility, teachability, hospitality, submission to biblical truth, and genuine love for fellow believers. Spiritual maturity is measured not by titles, gifts, or popularity but by obedience, humility, and willingness to receive God's Word and God's people.

The opposite example is found in Gaius, who faithfully received and supported God's servants. His life demonstrated love, generosity, truth, and faithfulness.

Today, examine your heart. Are you easy to correct? Do you welcome God's Word? Do you honour faithful servants of God? Do you promote unity or division? Christ calls us to receive Him by receiving His Word and His faithful messengers.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John identified a dangerous attitude in the life of Diotrephes, a man who desired to be first above everyone else. Instead of serving God's people with humility, he sought recognition, control, influence, and personal authority. His desire for prominence eventually led him to reject apostolic authority and divide the fellowship of believers.

The spirit of Diotrephes is still active today. It manifests whenever people seek positions instead of purpose, titles instead of testimony, applause instead of God's approval, and recognition instead of faithful service. It is seen in churches, families, workplaces, businesses, ministries, and even among young believers.

Jesus taught an entirely different lifestyle. He declared that greatness in His Kingdom is measured by humility and service, not by position or popularity (Matthew 20:26-28). Christ Himself, though equal with God, humbled Himself and became obedient unto death (Philippians 2:5-11).

The desire for preeminence often begins subtly through pride, comparison, jealousy, insecurity, and self-exaltation. Left unchecked, it produces rebellion, division, selfish ambition, unforgiveness, and spiritual blindness.

God promotes those who humble themselves before Him. Joseph served before he ruled. David shepherded sheep before becoming king. Moses spent years in the wilderness before leading Israel. Jesus washed His disciples' feet before going to the Cross.

A true servant of God rejoices when Christ alone is exalted. The greatest testimony is not that people know our names but that they see Jesus through our lives.

Today, examine your heart. Are you seeking God's glory or your own? Do you desire influence to serve others or authority to control them? True greatness belongs to those who willingly decrease so that Christ may increase.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

Diotrephes is one of the most tragic examples of spiritual pride recorded in Scripture. Although very little is written about him, what is recorded serves as a solemn warning to every believer, church leader, worker, and Christian.

John described Diotrephes as a man who "loved to have the preeminence." Instead of exalting Christ, he exalted himself. Instead of welcoming God's servants, he rejected apostolic authority. Instead of promoting unity, he created division. His ambition became greater than his submission to God.

The "spirit of Diotrephes" is not limited to one individual. It is a destructive attitude that manifests whenever people desire recognition more than righteousness, position more than purpose, influence more than integrity, and control more than Christ.

Many churches, ministries, families, organizations, and even Christian fellowships have suffered because of this spirit. It produces pride, jealousy, selfish ambition, rebellion against authority, slander, unforgiveness, manipulation, and refusal to accept correction.

Jesus taught the exact opposite. He declared that whoever desires greatness must first become a servant (Mark 10:42-45). Christ humbled Himself, washed His disciples' feet, and became obedient even unto death (Philippians 2:5-11).

God continually resists the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Every believer must therefore examine his or her heart daily. Am I seeking God's glory or my own? Do I rejoice when others are promoted? Am I teachable? Do I honour spiritual authority? Do I genuinely love the brethren?

The life of Diotrephes reminds us that outward religious activity cannot replace inward humility. God is more interested in our character than our title.

May the Lord remove every trace of pride, selfish ambition, and self-exaltation from our lives, and replace them with the humility of Christ.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John reveals a painful reality that can exist even within the church. He had written to the church with apostolic authority, yet one man, Diotrephes, refused to receive him. His love for prominence blinded him to the authority God had established. Instead of serving God's people in humility, he sought personal recognition, influence, and control.

The statement, "I wrote to the church," reminds us that God continually speaks to His people through His Word, the Holy Spirit, faithful ministers, and godly counsel. However, hearing God's message is not enough. We must receive it with humility and obedience.

Diotrephes represents believers who love position more than purpose, recognition more than righteousness, and authority more than accountability. Such attitudes destroy unity, hinder revival, and grieve the Holy Spirit.

God desires leaders and believers whose hearts remain teachable. Every Christian should possess a spirit that welcomes correction, embraces truth, honours spiritual authority, and promotes peace within the body of Christ.

When pride rules the heart, God's voice becomes difficult to hear. Pride resists correction, but humility attracts divine grace (James 4:6). The safest believer is not the one who knows the most but the one who remains teachable before God.

The church belongs to Christ, not to any individual. Every gift, office, position, and responsibility exists to glorify Jesus Christ alone. Whenever self replaces Christ, spiritual decline begins.

Today, God calls us to examine our hearts. Have we resisted correction? Have we ignored God's Word because it challenged our desires? Have we dishonoured those God has placed over us? The Lord invites us to return to humility so that His grace may flow freely through our lives.

1. The Locked Door

A respected teacher repeatedly knocked on the door of a student carrying important instructions. The student heard the voice but refused to open because he believed he already knew everything. Months later, he suffered unnecessary failure because he rejected the very guidance that would have preserved him.

2. The Fruit-Laden Tree

The tree carrying the greatest fruit naturally bends lower than the empty tree standing proudly upright. Likewise, believers who carry genuine spiritual fruit remain humble before God and people.
