BEWARE OF THE SPIRIT OF DIOTREPHES

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

"I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not." - 3 John 1:9 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

Diotrephes is remembered in Scripture not for his achievements, but for his pride, self-exaltation, and opposition to godly authority. His life is a warning that religious activity without humility can become destructive. The "spirit of Diotrephes" is an attitude that seeks prominence instead of service, control instead of submission, recognition instead of God's glory, and personal ambition instead of kingdom advancement.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The spirit of Diotrephes is one of the most dangerous spiritual diseases that can quietly enter the life of a believer, church leader, worker, business executive, or even a family head. John described Diotrephes as one who "loveth to have the preeminence." His greatest desire was not to glorify Christ but to occupy the highest position.

This spirit is characterized by pride, arrogance, rejection of correction, abuse of authority, selfish ambition, slander, division, and refusal to receive God's servants. Such people often appear spiritual outwardly but inwardly are driven by a desire for control and recognition.

Jesus taught the exact opposite. He humbled Himself, washed His disciples' feet, and declared that whoever desires to be greatest must become the servant of all (Mark 10:43-45).

The spirit of Diotrephes can manifest in different areas:

• Refusing correction.
• Always wanting personal recognition.
• Jealousy toward gifted people.
• Fighting genuine ministers of God.
• Destroying unity.
• Using influence to suppress others.
• Refusing accountability.
• Promoting self instead of Christ.
• Gossip and character assassination.
• Seeking titles rather than service.

God promotes humble people but resists the proud (James 4:6). Every believer must constantly examine his or her heart so that the spirit of Diotrephes does not replace the Spirit of Christ.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Proud Tower

A tall tower stood in the middle of a city boasting that it reached the clouds. During a violent storm, the tower collapsed because its foundation was weak. Nearby stood a humble cottage built upon solid rock. Though small, it survived.

2. The Empty Chair

In a church meeting, one leader insisted on occupying the highest seat every week. Eventually, people admired his position but not his character. CALL TO REPENTANCE

Examine your heart honestly. Have you sought recognition more than righteousness? Have you resisted correction, criticized others, or desired to control people? Today, Jesus calls you to lay down pride and put on humility.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Father, I confess every hidden pride, selfish ambition, jealousy, stubbornness, and desire for recognition. Forgive every attitude that resembles Diotrephes. Destroy every root of arrogance within me and create in me a humble heart that reflects Christ.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus Christ, I repent of every manifestation of pride in my life. Wash me with Your precious blood. Remove every spirit of self-exaltation. Fill me with Your humility, gentleness, wisdom, and love. Let my life glorify You alone. Amen.

Choose humility today. Celebrate someone else's success, receive correction graciously, and serve someone without expecting recognition.

Am I building God's Kingdom or my own reputation? If Christ alone receives the glory from my life, would I still be satisfied?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God delights in lifting those who humble themselves before Him. No act of genuine service goes unnoticed. As you walk in humility, the Lord will honour you in His own time and in His own way.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Earthly titles, influence, and applause will fade away, but a humble life lived for Christ will receive an eternal reward. Live today with eternity in view, seeking God's approval above human praise.

CLOSING DECLARATION

Today, I reject every spirit of pride, selfish ambition, and self-exaltation. I choose the humility of Christ. My life shall glorify God, promote unity, and reflect the servant-heart of Jesus. Amen.

The Lord shall establish me in humility, wisdom, honour, favour, and lasting fruitfulness. I shall serve with a pure heart, walk in the fear of God, and finish my race faithfully. WORDS OF TRUTH

The spirit of Diotrephes seeks to exalt self, but the Spirit of Christ exalts God. Pride may gain temporary influence, but humility secures eternal honour. Choose to serve rather than dominate, encourage rather than compete, and glorify Christ rather than yourself. For "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble" (James 4:6). May your life be marked by humility, love, and faithful service until Christ returns.
