WE MUST NOT LOVE THE WORLD ABOVE GOD - Pt 2

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. — 1 John 2:15-16

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

God does not command us to hate people or reject the world He created. He warns us against loving the sinful system of the world more than we love Him.

The world offers temporary pleasure, material possessions, status, pride, recognition and self-satisfaction. These things can quietly compete with God for our hearts.

The Bible identifies three major expressions of worldly love:

• The lust of the flesh — uncontrolled desire for sinful pleasure.
• The lust of the eyes — coveting what we see and wanting what belongs to others.
• The pride of life — boasting in possessions, position, achievement and status.

Everything in this world is temporary, but God is eternal.

Therefore, I must constantly examine my heart and ask:

“Is God still more valuable to me than everything this world can offer?”

“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” — 1 John 2:17

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

1. To love God above everything else — Matthew 22:37.
2. To recognise the temporary nature of worldly attractions — 1 John 2:17.
3. To resist the lust of the flesh, eyes and pride of life — 1 John 2:16.
4. To live according to God's will rather than worldly standards — Romans 12:2.
5. To keep eternity more important than earthly possessions and achievements — Matthew 6:19–21.

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS

1. Godly Love

God must occupy the highest place in my heart. — Deuteronomy 6:5

2. Contentment

I must learn to be satisfied with what God has given me. — Philippians 4:11–12

3. Self-Control

I must not allow physical desires to control my spiritual life. — Galatians 5:22–23

4. Humility

I must not allow possessions, position or achievements to make me proud. — James 4:6

5. Eternal-Mindedness

I must value eternal treasures above temporary earthly treasures. — Colossians 3:2

ILLUSTRATIONS

1: THE TWO TREASURES

A man received a priceless diamond and placed it beside a collection of colourful glass stones. Because the glass stones were more attractive to his eyes, he ignored the diamond.

Lesson:

Many people do the same spiritually. They exchange God's eternal treasure for temporary pleasures.

Never allow what shines temporarily to make you abandon what is eternally valuable.

2: THE ANCHOR AND THE WAVES

A ship without an anchor is easily moved by strong waves. It may drift wherever the current takes it.

Lesson:

The world constantly changes its values. If my heart is not anchored in God, I can easily drift into worldly values.

God's Word must be my anchor when the world tries to move me.

PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE

Lord, search my heart.

Have I loved money more than You?

Have I valued people's approval more than Your approval?

Have I compromised holiness to gain worldly advantage?

Have possessions, career, status, pleasure or ambition taken Your rightful place in my heart?

Today, I must return completely to God.

I cannot love the world more than the God who gave me life.

“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” — James 4:8

DEEP REPENTANCE

Father, I come before You in humility.

Forgive me for every time I have allowed worldly desires to become more important than You.

Forgive my greed, pride, covetousness, selfish ambition and desire for human approval.

Forgive me for pursuing temporary things while neglecting eternal values.

Cleanse my heart from every worldly attachment.

Remove every idol competing with You in my life.

Restore my first love for You.

Teach me contentment.

Give me grace to seek first Your kingdom and righteousness.

Let my heart belong completely to You.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father,

I confess that I have sometimes allowed the things of this world to compete with my love for You.

I repent today.

Forgive me and cleanse me.

I surrender my desires, ambitions, possessions and plans to You.

Help me love You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength.

Break every unhealthy attachment to worldly things.

Let my heart desire what pleases You.

Help me live for eternity rather than temporary satisfaction.

Let Christ remain first in my life.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

REFLECTION SCRIPTURES

1. 1 John 2:15–17

The world and its desires are temporary, but whoever does God's will abides forever.

Reflection: What am I pursuing that will not matter in eternity?

2. Matthew 6:19–21

Jesus teaches us to store treasures in heaven because our hearts follow our treasures.

Reflection: Where is my heart, on earth or in eternity?

3. Romans 12:2

Believers must not conform to the world's values but be transformed by God's Word.

Reflection: Is my lifestyle shaped more by Scripture or by society?

4. Matthew 6:33

Jesus commands us to seek God's kingdom and righteousness first.

Reflection: What currently occupies first place in my priorities?

5. James 4:4

Friendship with the world's sinful system places a person in opposition to God.

Reflection: Have I compromised my relationship with God to fit into the world?

The hymn is appropriate because it expresses complete surrender of one's life, possessions, ambitions and will to God.

“Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.”

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Today:

• Identify one worldly desire competing with your love for God.
• Surrender it to God in prayer.
• Avoid one activity or influence that consistently pulls your heart away from Christ.
• Give God your first time, first attention and first priority today.
• Do one thing that advances God's kingdom rather than your personal recognition.

Ask yourself:

“If I had to choose between pleasing God and gaining what the world offers, which would I choose?”

DEEP REFLECTION

The question is not whether I possess worldly things.

The question is:

“Do worldly things possess me?”

I can have money without loving money.

I can have a career without worshipping my career.

I can have possessions without allowing possessions to control me.

I can enjoy legitimate earthly blessings without making them my god.

The problem begins when God's gifts become more important than God Himself.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Beloved, you do not need to compete with the world.

You do not need everything the world offers to be fulfilled.

Christ is enough.

When God is first, earthly blessings find their proper place.

When God is first, success will not destroy you.

When God is first, possessions will serve you rather than rule you.

When God is first, disappointment will not destroy your hope.

When God is first, eternity becomes more valuable than temporary applause.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

One day, everything earthly will be left behind.

Money will remain behind.

Buildings will remain behind.

Titles will remain behind.

Vehicles will remain behind.

Achievements will remain behind.

Popularity will disappear.

But your soul will stand before God.

Therefore:

Do not sacrifice eternity for temporary pleasure.

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36

Live today with eternity in view.

PERSONAL CLOSING DECLARATION

I declare that God is more valuable to me than anything this world can offer.

I will not exchange eternal treasures for temporary pleasures.

I will not allow money, possessions, ambition, status or human approval to become my god.

My heart belongs to Christ.

My desires will submit to God's Word.

My priorities will honour God.

My life will reflect His kingdom.

I will enjoy God's blessings without worshipping His blessings.

I will pursue success without losing my soul.

I will live with eternity in view.

God shall remain first in my life.

PERSONAL PRAYER POINTS

1. Father, deliver me from every worldly desire that competes with my love for You and restore You to the highest place in my heart, in the name of Jesus.

2. O Lord, break every power of greed, covetousness, pride, materialism and unhealthy ambition operating in my life, in the name of Jesus.

3. Father, give me grace to resist the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, in the name of Jesus.

4. Lord, help me to seek Your kingdom first and to value eternal treasures above temporary earthly possessions, in the name of Jesus.

5. Father, preserve my heart from worldly deception and help me finish my earthly journey faithful to You, with my soul prepared for eternity, in the name of Jesus.

PERSONAL PROPHETIC DECLARATION

I declare over my life:

I shall not be controlled by the spirit of this world.

I shall not lose my soul pursuing earthly success.

I shall not exchange God's presence for worldly pleasure.

I shall not exchange holiness for popularity.

I shall not exchange eternity for temporary gratification.

My heart shall remain fixed on Christ.

My desires shall be governed by God's Word.

My treasures shall have eternal value.

I shall prosper according to God's will without becoming a slave to prosperity.

I shall possess earthly blessings without allowing them to possess me.

I shall overcome the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.

God will remain first in my life, and I will finish well.

PERSONAL WORDS OF TRUTH

I MUST NOT LOVE THE WORLD MORE THAN GOD.

The world can give me pleasure, but only God can give me peace.

The world can give me possessions, but only God can give me eternal riches.

The world can give me recognition, but only God can give me eternal significance.

The world can give me temporary satisfaction, but only Christ can satisfy my soul.

Therefore:

I WILL NOT TRADE MY ETERNITY FOR THE WORLD.

God first.
Christ first.
The Kingdom first.
Eternity first.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” — Matthew 6:33

THE WORLD IS PASSING AWAY, BUT GOD'S WORD AND THOSE WHO DO HIS WILL ABIDE FOREVER.

This is my truth.
This is my decision.
This is my commitment.
