WE MUST NOT LOVE THE WORLD ABOVE GOD - Pt 1
ANCHOR SCRIPTURE
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
God does not forbid us from appreciating His creation or responsibly enjoying the blessings He gives us. The warning in 1 John 2:15 is against loving the sinful world-system and allowing worldly values, pleasures, possessions, pride and ambitions to take God's rightful place in our hearts.
The world is temporary, but God is eternal. What the world offers may satisfy the flesh for a moment, but only God can satisfy the soul forever.
The danger begins when what we want becomes more important than what God wants.
Jesus asked:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” — Mark 8:36
We must therefore examine our hearts continually. If money, status, pleasure, relationships, possessions, career or human approval become more important than obedience to God, we have allowed the world to compete with our love for Him.
Love God above everything. Use the things of this world without allowing them to possess your heart.
BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES
- To love God above everything else. — Matthew 22:37
- To recognise the temporary nature of worldly attractions. — 1 John 2:17
- To reject sinful worldly values and compromise. — Romans 12:2
- To keep our hearts focused on eternal things. — Colossians 3:2

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS
1. Worldliness competes with God's love
“If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15
2. Worldliness appeals to sinful desires
“The lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life...” — 1 John 2:16
3. Worldliness is temporary
“The world passeth away, and the lust thereof...” — 1 John 2:17
4. God's will is eternal
“He that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” — 1 John 2:17
5. God calls us to transformation
“Be not conformed to this world...” — Romans 12:2
ILLUSTRATIONS
1: THE TWO MASTERS
A person cannot sincerely serve two masters when their demands conflict. Jesus said:
“Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” — Matthew 6:24
LESSON:
When worldly gain demands disobedience to God, God must come first.
2: THE TEMPORARY CROWN
Imagine an athlete receiving a beautiful crown that eventually fades, while another receives an imperishable crown that lasts forever.
Paul reminds us:
“They do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.” — 1 Corinthians 9:25
LESSON:
Do not sacrifice eternal rewards for temporary applause, pleasure or possessions.
PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE
Examine your heart today.
Have you loved money more than God?
Have you pursued human approval more than God's approval?
Have pleasure, possessions, career, relationships or status become idols?
Have you compromised your convictions to fit into the world?
If the answer is yes, return to God today.
Do not allow temporary things to steal your eternal destiny.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” — James 4:8
DEEP REPENTANCE
Father, I come before You with humility.
Forgive me for every occasion when I have loved the world more than I have loved You.
Forgive my greed, pride, selfish ambition, covetousness and desire for human approval.
Forgive me for every compromise I have made to gain worldly acceptance or advantage.
Cleanse my heart from every worldly affection that has displaced You.
Destroy every idol in my heart.
Teach me to desire You above possessions, pleasure, position and recognition.
Give me grace to love what You love and reject what displeases You.
Let my heart belong completely to You.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Heavenly Father,
I confess my sins and acknowledge my need for Your mercy.
I repent of loving worldly things above You.
I surrender my heart afresh to Jesus Christ.
Help me to seek first Your kingdom and righteousness.
Deliver me from every form of worldliness and compromise.
Give me strength to live according to Your Word.
Let my life glorify You on earth and prepare me for eternity.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
REFLECTION SCRIPTURES
1. 1 John 2:15–17
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world...”
Summary: The world and its desires are temporary, but those who do God's will abide forever.
2. Matthew 6:33
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness...”
Summary: God's kingdom must remain our highest priority.
3. Romans 12:2
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...”
Summary: Christians must resist worldly patterns and allow God's Word to transform their thinking.
4. Colossians 3:2
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.”
Summary: Our hearts must be directed toward eternal realities.
5. James 4:4
“...whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
Summary: Friendship with a sinful world-system creates conflict with loyalty to God.
HYMN
Take My Life, and Let It Be
Author: Frances Ridley Havergal (1836–1879)
The hymn is appropriate because it expresses complete surrender of one's life, possessions, will and ambitions to God.
“Take my life, and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise.”
Message: Everything I have belongs to God; therefore, nothing worldly should take His place.
TODAY'S CHALLENGE
Today:
- Identify one worldly desire that is competing with your devotion to God.
- Surrender it to God in prayer.
- Refuse one temptation to compromise your Christian values.
- Spend time in God's Word instead of pursuing unnecessary worldly distractions.
- Do one thing that advances God's kingdom rather than merely your personal interest.
Today's question:
“If I had to choose between pleasing God and gaining worldly approval, which would I choose?”
DEEP REFLECTION
What occupies the highest place in my heart?
If God removed my possessions, position, money, popularity and achievements, would I still love Him?
The real test of our love for God is not what we say in church but what we are unwilling to surrender in obedience to Him.
Do not let temporary things become eternal idols.
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
You do not need the world's approval to have God's approval.
You do not need worldly riches to have eternal riches.
You do not need worldly recognition to be known by God.
When you choose God over temporary pleasures, you are never losing what truly matters.
God sees your obedience.
God sees your sacrifice.
God sees your faithfulness.
Keep following Him.
What you surrender for God will never compare with what God has prepared for those who love Him.
ETERNITY IN VIEW
One day, every earthly possession will be left behind.
Money will not follow you.
Cars will not follow you.
Houses will not follow you.
Titles will not follow you.
Human applause will not follow you.
But your relationship with God has eternal consequences.

Live today with eternity in view.
PERSONAL CLOSING DECLARATION
I declare that God is first in my life.
My heart belongs to Jesus Christ.
I will not love the world above God.
I will not exchange eternal treasures for temporary pleasures.
I will not compromise my faith for worldly acceptance.
I will not allow money, possessions, position or human approval to become my god.
My affection is set on things above.
My mind is renewed by God's Word.
My life will glorify God.
I will seek first God's kingdom and righteousness.
I will finish my race faithfully and inherit eternal life.
In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
PERSONAL PRAYER POINTS
1. Father, deliver my heart from every form of worldliness and help me love You above every person, possession, pleasure and position, in the name of Jesus.
2. O Lord, destroy every hidden idol in my heart and remove anything that competes with Your rightful place in my life, in the name of Jesus.
3. Father, give me grace to resist the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, in the name of Jesus.
4. Lord, help me to seek first Your kingdom and righteousness and never compromise my faith for worldly gain or human approval, in the name of Jesus.
5. Father, keep my eyes focused on eternal things and help me finish my Christian journey faithfully until I inherit the crown of life, in the name of Jesus.
PERSONAL PROPHETIC DECLARATION
I declare over my life:
I shall not be controlled by the spirit of worldliness.
I shall not exchange my destiny for temporary pleasure.
I shall not lose my soul while pursuing worldly success.
My heart shall remain devoted to God.
My desires shall be governed by God's Word.
I shall overcome every temptation to compromise.
I shall prosper according to God's will without losing my soul.
I shall choose righteousness over popularity.
I shall choose obedience over convenience.
I shall choose eternity over temporary pleasure.
The world will not have my heart; Christ has my heart!
I will finish well.
I will finish strong.
I will remain faithful to God until the end.

PERSONAL WORDS OF TRUTH
DO NOT TRADE ETERNITY FOR TEMPORARY THINGS.
The world can give you pleasure, but it cannot give you eternal life.
The world can give you applause, but it cannot save your soul.
The world can give you possessions, but it cannot give you peace with God.
The world can give you position, but it cannot give you a place in eternity.
God must always be greater than what He gives.
Love God more than money.
Love God more than success.
Love God more than relationships.
Love God more than possessions.
Love God more than popularity.
Love God more than your own ambitions.
The world is passing away, but God remains forever.
Therefore:
Choose God.
Love God.
Obey God.
Serve God.
Live for God.
And keep eternity in view.
“He that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” — 1 John 2:17
THE WORDS OF TRUTH:
NEVER LET WHAT IS TEMPORARY BECOME MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GOD WHO IS ETERNAL.
