𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
WHEN PRIDE REJECTS GOD'S TRUE SERVANTS

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

"I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not." - 3 John 1:9 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The apostle John expressed deep concern over a man named Diotrephes, who loved prominence more than truth. His desire to be first caused him to reject apostolic authority, refuse faithful brethren, spread malicious words, and discourage others from receiving God's servants (3 John 1:9–10).

The phrase "receiveth us not" was not merely about refusing hospitality. It revealed a heart that rejected God's authority, resisted correction, and exalted personal ambition above Christ. Diotrephes wanted influence without submission, leadership without humility, and recognition without accountability.

Many people today unknowingly develop the spirit of Diotrephes. They reject correction, despise spiritual authority, refuse sound biblical teaching, isolate themselves from genuine fellowship, and seek personal glory rather than God's glory. Such attitudes hinder spiritual growth and create division within Christ's body.

God calls every believer to cultivate humility, teachability, hospitality, submission to biblical truth, and genuine love for fellow believers. Spiritual maturity is measured not by titles, gifts, or popularity but by obedience, humility, and willingness to receive God's Word and God's people.

The opposite example is found in Gaius, who faithfully received and supported God's servants. His life demonstrated love, generosity, truth, and faithfulness.

Today, examine your heart. Are you easy to correct? Do you welcome God's Word? Do you honour faithful servants of God? Do you promote unity or division? Christ calls us to receive Him by receiving His Word and His faithful messengers.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To cultivate genuine humility before God.
  2. To reject pride and selfish ambition.
  3. To honour biblical authority.
  4. To receive God's Word with meekness.
  5. To support faithful ministers of the Gospel.
  6. To promote unity within the Church.
  7. To become teachable and correctable.
  8. To develop Christlike love toward believers.
  9. To avoid slander and divisive behaviour.
  10. To glorify Christ rather than self.

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A GODLY BELIEVER

  1. Humility (Philippians 2:3-5)
  2. Love for brethren (John 13:35)
  3. Hospitality (Hebrews 13:2)
  4. Submission to God's Word (James 1:21-22)
  5. Teachable spirit (Proverbs 9:9)
  6. Peace-making (Matthew 5:9)
  7. Faithfulness (1 Corinthians 4:2)
  8. Servanthood (Mark 10:43-45)
  9. Integrity (Psalm 15:1-2)
  10. Obedience to Christ (John 14:15)

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Closed Door

A king sent trusted messengers to deliver life-saving instructions to a village before an approaching flood. The village leader refused to receive them because he wanted everyone to depend on his own wisdom. The flood came, and many suffered unnecessary loss.

Lessons

  • Pride rejects God's warnings.
  • Rejecting God's messengers often means rejecting God Himself.
  • Humility opens the door to divine preservation.

2. The Fruitful Branch

A healthy branch remains connected to the tree, receiving nourishment continuously. Once separated through pride, it gradually dries up and dies.

Lessons

  • Spiritual life depends on remaining connected to Christ.
  • Pride separates; humility preserves.
  • God's grace flows through surrendered hearts.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

If you have resisted correction, rejected biblical counsel, despised faithful ministers, or allowed pride to rule your heart, come before the Lord today. He gives grace to the humble but resists the proud.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge every trace of pride, rebellion, stubbornness, self-exaltation, and resistance to Your authority within me. Forgive me for every occasion where I chose my own will above Yours. Create in me a humble and teachable spirit that delights in obeying You completely.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father, I confess all my sins before You. Wash me by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Remove every spirit of pride, arrogance, rebellion, selfish ambition, bitterness, and unforgiveness from my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to honour Your Word, Your servants, and Your Church. Let my life glorify Christ alone. In Jesus' name. Amen.

REFLECTION SCRIPTURES

  1. Proverbs 16:18 — Pride leads to destruction.
  2. James 4:6 — God gives grace to the humble.
  3. Philippians 2:3-8 — Christ is our example of humility.
  4. Romans 12:10 — Honour one another.
  5. Hebrews 13:17 — Respect godly leadership.
  6. Matthew 23:11-12 — The greatest is the servant.

  9. Ephesians 4:2-3 — Maintain unity in humility.

HYMN

Take My Life, and Let It Be Consecrated
Frances Ridley Havergal (1836–1879)

Theme: Complete surrender, humility, and wholehearted dedication to Christ.

Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Identify one area where pride has prevented you from accepting godly counsel or correction. Humbly surrender it to Christ today and intentionally encourage someone who faithfully serves God.

DEEP REFLECTION

Is Christ truly Lord over my heart, or do I secretly seek recognition, control, and personal glory? Would my actions resemble Gaius or Diotrephes?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God delights in humble hearts. Every act of obedience, submission, and genuine love is precious before Him. As you humble yourself under God's mighty hand, He will lift you up at the proper time.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Earthly positions, titles, and recognition will pass away, but those who faithfully serve Christ with humility will receive an everlasting reward in His eternal kingdom.

CLOSING DECLARATION

I choose humility over pride, truth over self-interest, obedience over rebellion, and Christ above personal ambition. I will receive God's Word, honour His servants, and walk in love all the days of my life through the power of the Holy Spirit.

PERSONAL PRAYER POINTS

  1. Father, destroy every root of pride in my life, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Lord, give me a humble and teachable heart, in the name of Jesus.
  3. Let me always receive Your Word with gladness, in the name of Jesus.
  4. Help me to honour faithful servants of God, in the name of Jesus.
  5. Remove every spirit of rebellion from my heart, in the name of Jesus.
  6. Fill me with genuine love for the brethren, in the name of Jesus.
  7. Let my life promote unity within the Body of Christ, in the name of Jesus.
  8. Keep me faithful and obedient to Your will, in the name of Jesus.
  9. Let the character of Christ be fully formed in me, in the name of Jesus.
  10. May my life bring glory to You alone until the end, in the name of Jesus.

PROPHETIC DECLARATION

I declare that every spirit of pride, rebellion, and self-exaltation is broken over your life. May the Lord clothe you with humility, wisdom, favour, and discernment. May you walk in truth, receive divine instruction with joy, and become a vessel of honour for the Master's use. Doors of grace, peace, promotion, and spiritual growth shall open before you as you humble yourself before God. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.

WORDS OF TRUTH

Humility receives what pride rejects. Those who receive God's Word, honour His servants, and walk in obedience will experience His grace, while those who exalt themselves above His truth risk losing both spiritual influence and eternal reward. Therefore, let Christ alone have the preeminence in your heart.
