THE DANGER OF LOVING PREEMINENCE

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

"I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not." — 3 John 1:9 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John identified a dangerous attitude in the life of Diotrephes, a man who desired to be first above everyone else. Instead of serving God's people with humility, he sought recognition, control, influence, and personal authority. His desire for prominence eventually led him to reject apostolic authority and divide the fellowship of believers.

The spirit of Diotrephes is still active today. It manifests whenever people seek positions instead of purpose, titles instead of testimony, applause instead of God's approval, and recognition instead of faithful service. It is seen in churches, families, workplaces, businesses, ministries, and even among young believers.

Jesus taught an entirely different lifestyle. He declared that greatness in His Kingdom is measured by humility and service, not by position or popularity (Matthew 20:26-28). Christ Himself, though equal with God, humbled Himself and became obedient unto death (Philippians 2:5-11).

The desire for preeminence often begins subtly through pride, comparison, jealousy, insecurity, and self-exaltation. Left unchecked, it produces rebellion, division, selfish ambition, unforgiveness, and spiritual blindness.

God promotes those who humble themselves before Him. Joseph served before he ruled. David shepherded sheep before becoming king. Moses spent years in the wilderness before leading Israel. Jesus washed His disciples' feet before going to the Cross.

A true servant of God rejoices when Christ alone is exalted. The greatest testimony is not that people know our names but that they see Jesus through our lives.

Today, examine your heart. Are you seeking God's glory or your own? Do you desire influence to serve others or authority to control them? True greatness belongs to those who willingly decrease so that Christ may increase.

10. Depends entirely upon God (Proverbs 3:5-6).

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Proud Tower

A man built the tallest tower in his city so everyone would admire him. He spent all his strength decorating the outside but ignored the weak foundation. During a violent storm, the tower collapsed because its foundation could not support its height.

2. The Fruit-Laden Tree

The tree with the greatest fruit bent its branches low, while the empty trees stood proudly upright.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

If pride, self-promotion, jealousy, competition, or the desire to be recognized has occupied your heart, come before God today. Confess every hidden motive and surrender your ambitions to Christ. Ask Him to make you a servant who seeks His glory alone.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge every seed of pride, selfish ambition, arrogance, envy, and self-exaltation within me. Forgive me for every time I desired recognition above obedience or placed my own honour before Yours. Remove every spirit of Diotrephes from my life and fill me with the humility of Christ.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father, I repent of every form of pride, rebellion, selfish ambition, and desire for preeminence. Wash me in the precious blood of Jesus. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Let Christ alone be exalted in my thoughts, words, decisions, and actions. Make me a faithful servant until the end. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Summary

These passages teach that humility attracts God's grace, while pride leads to spiritual downfall. The believer's goal is to exalt Christ, serve others, and walk in submission to God.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Identify one area where you seek recognition more than faithfulness. Deliberately perform an act of service today without expecting appreciation or reward, and let all the glory belong to God.

DEEP REFLECTION

Am I seeking to make Christ known, or am I seeking to make myself known? If God removed every title, position, and public recognition from my life today, would my devotion to Him remain unchanged?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God sees faithful service even when people do not. Your reward is not determined by public applause but by God's approval. Continue walking humbly with Christ. In His perfect time, He exalts those who faithfully honour Him.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Earthly positions, titles, and influence will one day pass away. On the Day of Judgment, Christ will not ask how famous you became but how faithfully you served. Live today with eternity in view, seeking to hear: "Well done, good and faithful servant."

CLOSING DECLARATION

Today I choose humility over pride, service over self-promotion, obedience over ambition, and Christ above all. Jesus Christ alone shall have the preeminence in my life, family, ministry, career, business, and future. Amen.

The Lord shall promote me according to His perfect will, and my life shall continually bring honour to Jesus Christ. I shall decrease, Christ shall increase, and His glory shall shine through me. WORDS OF TRUTH

True greatness is never achieved by demanding recognition but by faithfully serving God and others. Pride seeks the highest seat, but humility kneels at the Master's feet. Let Christ alone have the preeminence in your heart, for only the life that exalts Him will receive eternal honour.
