WHEN PRIDE REJECTS GODLY AUTHORITY

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

“I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.” - 3 John 1:9 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John reveals a painful reality that can exist even within the church. He had written to the church with apostolic authority, yet one man, Diotrephes, refused to receive him. His love for prominence blinded him to the authority God had established. Instead of serving God's people in humility, he sought personal recognition, influence, and control.

The statement, "I wrote to the church," reminds us that God continually speaks to His people through His Word, the Holy Spirit, faithful ministers, and godly counsel. However, hearing God's message is not enough. We must receive it with humility and obedience.

Diotrephes represents believers who love position more than purpose, recognition more than righteousness, and authority more than accountability. Such attitudes destroy unity, hinder revival, and grieve the Holy Spirit.

God desires leaders and believers whose hearts remain teachable. Every Christian should possess a spirit that welcomes correction, embraces truth, honours spiritual authority, and promotes peace within the body of Christ.

When pride rules the heart, God's voice becomes difficult to hear. Pride resists correction, but humility attracts divine grace (James 4:6). The safest believer is not the one who knows the most but the one who remains teachable before God.

The church belongs to Christ, not to any individual. Every gift, office, position, and responsibility exists to glorify Jesus Christ alone. Whenever self replaces Christ, spiritual decline begins.

Today, God calls us to examine our hearts. Have we resisted correction? Have we ignored God's Word because it challenged our desires? Have we dishonoured those God has placed over us? The Lord invites us to return to humility so that His grace may flow freely through our lives.

1. Receives correction gladly (Proverbs 9:8–9).

3. Serves others selflessly (Mark 10:45).
4. Loves unity among believers (Psalm 133:1).
5. Submits to godly authority (Hebrews 13:17).
6. Seeks God's glory above personal honour (John 3:30).
7. Listens before speaking (James 1:19).
8. Forgives quickly (Ephesians 4:32).
9. Remains faithful in service (Luke 16:10).
10. Depends completely upon God (Proverbs 3:5–6).

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Locked Door

A respected teacher repeatedly knocked on the door of a student carrying important instructions. The student heard the voice but refused to open because he believed he already knew everything. Months later, he suffered unnecessary failure because he rejected the very guidance that would have preserved him.

Lesson

A closed heart eventually closes the door to God's blessings.

2. The Fruit-Laden Tree

The tree carrying the greatest fruit naturally bends lower than the empty tree standing proudly upright. Likewise, believers who carry genuine spiritual fruit remain humble before God and people.

Lesson

The more God blesses you, the more humble you should become.

PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE

Ask yourself honestly:

• Have I resisted godly correction?
• Have I sought recognition more than service?
• Have I dishonoured spiritual authority?
• Have I allowed pride to control my decisions?

Today is the day to surrender completely to Christ and allow Him to transform your heart.

PERSONAL DEEP REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I confess every hidden pride, self-exaltation, rebellion, stubbornness, and desire for personal glory. Remove every spirit of Diotrephes from my life. Give me a humble heart that gladly receives Your Word and honours those You have appointed over me.

PERSONAL PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father, I repent of every attitude that has grieved Your Spirit. Forgive my pride, arrogance, selfish ambition, and resistance to correction. Wash me by the blood of Jesus Christ. Fill me with humility, love, wisdom, and obedience. Make me a faithful servant who seeks only Your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Choose humility over recognition today. Accept correction graciously, encourage another believer sincerely, and let Christ receive all the glory for every success.

If God were to write a personal letter to you today, would you receive it with joy, or would pride prevent you from obeying His voice?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God never rejects a humble heart. No matter your past failures, His mercy is available today. As you submit yourself to Him, He will lift you up in His own perfect time and establish you in His purpose.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Positions, titles, and earthly recognition will all pass away. What will matter in eternity is whether you faithfully obeyed Christ, served His people with humility, and finished your race well.

PERSONAL CLOSING DECLARATION

Today I choose humility over pride, obedience over rebellion, and service over self-promotion. My heart remains open to God's Word, His correction, and His divine purpose. Jesus Christ alone shall be glorified in my life forever. Amen.

WORDS OF TRUTH

God still writes to His Church through His Word. The believer who receives His message with humility will experience His grace, grow in spiritual maturity, strengthen the unity of the body of Christ, and be prepared to reign with Christ in eternity. Pride closes the heart, but humility opens the door to God's presence, power, and everlasting reward.
