ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

"Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God." - 3 John 1:11 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

In a generation where people redefine morality according to personal opinions, God remains the unchanging standard of what is good. The Apostle John did not merely tell believers to avoid evil; he instructed them to deliberately imitate and pursue what is good.

The obvious question then becomes, "What is good?"

Good is not simply what feels pleasant, appears attractive, or receives public approval. According to Scripture, good is whatever agrees with God's holy nature, His Word, His will, and His purpose.

Good begins with God Himself.

Jesus declared in Mark 10:18, "There is none good but one, that is, God." Therefore, true goodness cannot exist independently of God. Every genuine act of goodness flows from a heart transformed by Christ.

Good includes:

• Obeying God's commands.
• Loving God and loving people.
• Walking in truth.
• Showing mercy and compassion.
• Living in holiness.
• Forgiving those who offend us.
• Speaking words that edify.
• Acting with integrity.
• Serving others selflessly.
• Remaining faithful even when nobody is watching.

The Bible warns that evil often disguises itself as wisdom, progress, popularity, or pleasure. Satan rarely presents evil as something ugly; he often packages it attractively. That is why believers need spiritual discernment through God's Word.

Paul instructed believers in Romans 12:9:

"Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good."

Choosing good is a daily decision. It influences our speech, relationships, business dealings, family life, financial integrity, worship, leadership, and eternal destiny.

The greatest demonstration of goodness is Jesus Christ Himself. Throughout His earthly ministry, He "went about doing good" (Acts 10:38), healing the broken, delivering the oppressed, forgiving sinners, and ultimately giving His life for mankind.

Every believer is therefore called to reflect the goodness of Christ in a dark world.

Today, ask yourself:

• Does my character reflect God's goodness?
• Are my private decisions honouring God?
• Am I influencing others toward righteousness?
• Can people see Christ through my lifestyle?

Those who continually pursue God's goodness reveal that they belong to Him.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE WHO FOLLOW WHAT IS GOOD

1. They obey God's Word (James 1:22).
2. They love sincerely (1 John 4:7).
3. They speak truthfully (Ephesians 4:25).
4. They forgive freely (Colossians 3:13).
5. They show mercy (Micah 6:8).
6. They walk humbly (James 4:10).
7. They pursue peace (Hebrews 12:14).
8. They remain faithful (Revelation 2:10).
9. They are generous (Proverbs 11:25).
10. They persevere in righteousness (Galatians 6:9).

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Two Builders

Jesus described two builders in Matthew 7:24-27. One obeyed Christ's words and built upon the rock. The other ignored His instructions and built upon sand.

When storms came, only the house founded upon obedience remained standing.

2. The Good Samaritan

Although religious leaders ignored the wounded man, the Samaritan stopped, cared for him, paid his expenses, and restored his hope (Luke 10:30-37).

• True religion serves others.

PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE

Lord, I acknowledge that I have sometimes chosen convenience above obedience and personal desires above Your will. I repent of every evil thought, careless word, selfish attitude, hidden sin, and act of disobedience. Teach me to love what You love and hate what You hate.

PERSONAL DEEP REPENTANCE

Merciful Father, expose every hidden darkness within me. Remove every root of pride, bitterness, envy, hypocrisy, compromise, greed, unforgiveness, rebellion, and spiritual complacency. Wash me completely through the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Let my life become a living testimony of Your goodness.

Heavenly Father, I confess that I am a sinner in need of Your mercy. Forgive all my sins through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Cleanse me from every unrighteousness. Fill me with the Holy Spirit and empower me to reject evil and follow what is good every day of my life. Let Christ be seen in me until the day I stand before You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

If Jesus examined every hidden thought, conversation, financial decision, relationship, and motivation in your life today, would He describe your life as following what is good?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God never asks His children to pursue goodness without supplying the grace to live it. As you remain in Christ, the Holy Spirit will strengthen you to overcome temptation, grow in holiness, and reflect the character of Jesus daily.

The goodness that pleases God is not a means of earning salvation but the evidence of a life transformed by Christ. Live each day with eternity before you, knowing that every act of faithful obedience has eternal significance.

WORDS OF TRUTH

Good is not determined by culture, emotions, popularity, or human opinion. Good is defined by the nature, Word, and will of God. Whoever continually follows Christ walks in goodness, reflects His character, blesses others, glorifies God, and prepares for eternity. Therefore, "follow not that which is evil, but that which is good" (3 John 1:11).

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE

"Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God." - 3 John 1:11 (NKJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John lovingly addressed believers as "Beloved," reminding them that they are deeply loved by God and therefore must live differently from the world. Christians are constantly surrounded by influences that encourage compromise, dishonesty, immorality, pride, revenge, greed, and rebellion against God. John's instruction is clear: do not imitate evil.

Imitation is a natural part of human life. Children imitate their parents, students imitate their teachers, and believers often imitate spiritual leaders. The danger arises when people begin to admire and copy those whose lives oppose God's standards. Evil often appears attractive because it promises quick success, popularity, wealth, pleasure, or power, but its end is destruction (Proverbs 14:12).

John wrote these words partly because of the bad example of Diotrephes (3 John 1:9-10), whose pride, selfish ambition, and refusal to receive God's servants were damaging the church. Rather than imitate such behaviour, believers were encouraged to follow the example of faithful men like Demetrius (3 John 1:12), whose testimony reflected Christ.

Every day presents opportunities to choose whom we will imitate. We either follow Christ or follow the world. Our speech, attitudes, relationships, business dealings, financial integrity, family life, and private conduct should reflect the character of Jesus Christ.

Doing good does not earn salvation, but it demonstrates that God's life is working within us. Genuine faith always produces righteous living. Those who truly know Christ pursue holiness, mercy, humility, truthfulness, forgiveness, generosity, and obedience to God's Word.

God calls every believer to become a light in a dark generation. Instead of following sinful trends, we must become examples worthy of imitation ourselves (1 Corinthians 11:1).

2. The Lighthouse That Never Moves

A lighthouse remains firmly planted while ships safely navigate because of its light. It does not follow the darkness but overcomes it.

Examine your life honestly before God. Have you admired worldly success more than godly character? Have you copied sinful habits, dishonest practices, immoral lifestyles, or unforgiving attitudes? Today Christ lovingly calls you to forsake every evil pattern and return completely to Him.

BEWARE OF THE SIN OF CASTING BELIEVERS OUT OF THE CHURCH

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

"Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church." - 3 John 1:10 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The church of Jesus Christ is not a personal empire but the household of God, where Christ alone is the Head (Colossians 1:18). In 3 John 1:10, the Apostle John exposed the sinful conduct of Diotrephes, a man who loved prominence more than godliness. Rather than welcoming faithful believers, he slandered God's servants, rejected genuine brethren, discouraged those who wanted to show hospitality, and even expelled faithful members from the fellowship.

The issue was not church discipline against unrepentant sinners, which the Bible permits (Matthew 18:15–17; 1 Corinthians 5:1–13). Instead, Diotrephes abused authority for selfish ambition, pride, jealousy, and personal control. His actions opposed God's purpose for His Church.

Many believers today unknowingly imitate the spirit of Diotrephes. Some leaders use their positions to suppress faithful workers, remove gifted believers because of envy, reject correction, or create divisions through selfish ambition. Others exclude people because of tribe, social status, wealth, or personal disagreements instead of biblical truth.

Every church leader must remember that leadership is stewardship, not ownership. Every member should equally avoid gossip, rebellion, favoritism, and actions that divide Christ's body.

Jesus Christ welcomes sincere sinners who come in repentance. Therefore, His followers must reflect His love, justice, humility, and truth. While biblical discipline must be exercised when necessary, it should always aim at restoration, never personal revenge or abuse of authority.

May we never become instruments that discourage faithful believers from serving God. Instead, may our lives strengthen the unity, holiness, and love of Christ's Church.

2. The Good Shepherd Receives His Sheep

Jesus welcomed the rejected, restored the broken, and gave hope to sinners who repented. He never used His authority for selfish gain.

Search your heart honestly. Have you discouraged another believer? Have you spoken against faithful servants of God? Have you used influence to divide God's people or sought recognition above God's glory? Today, humble yourself before the Lord and seek His forgiveness.

Father, I acknowledge every trace of pride, jealousy, selfish ambition, bitterness, unforgiveness, manipulation, and abuse of influence within me. Forgive me for every word or action that has wounded Your Church. Remove every spirit of Diotrephes from my heart. Fill me with the humility, love, and servant spirit of Jesus Christ.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Become a source of encouragement today. Speak words that build up another believer, reconcile where there is conflict, and promote unity instead of division.

DEEP REFLECTION

If Jesus were to examine my conduct in His Church today, would He see a servant who builds His people up, or someone who tears them down through pride, harshness, or selfish ambition?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God honours those who walk humbly before Him. Even if you have been rejected unfairly by people, Christ knows your faithfulness. Continue serving Him with a pure heart. He will vindicate His own and reward every act of faithful service done in His name.

Church positions, titles, and influence are temporary, but Christ's judgment is eternal. Every believer and every leader will give an account of how they treated God's people. Live each day in a way that prepares you to hear, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John exposes the dangerous conduct of Diotrephes, a church leader who desired prominence instead of servanthood. He not only refused to receive faithful believers but also prevented others who wished to do good from doing so. This was not merely a personal weakness; it was opposition to God's work.

Many people today resemble Diotrephes. They discourage those who want to serve God, frustrate sincere workers in the church, block opportunities for faithful people, spread false accusations, and use positions of authority for selfish gain. Rather than encouraging ministry, they hinder it.

God never appoints leaders to suppress His work. Leadership in God's kingdom is stewardship, humility, service, and accountability. Every believer should become a bridge that connects people to Christ instead of becoming a barrier that drives them away.

The Lord delights in those who encourage others, strengthen weak hands, welcome strangers, support missionaries, disciple young believers, and create opportunities for people to fulfill God's calling. Every act that advances God's kingdom attracts Heaven's approval.

We must also examine ourselves. Sometimes we hinder God's work through jealousy, pride, criticism, unforgiveness, selfish ambition, fear, or indifference. We may discourage someone's calling through negative words or unnecessary opposition. Every believer should ask, "Am I helping God's work to grow or making it more difficult?"

Christ Himself welcomed sinners, restored the broken, empowered His disciples, and commissioned them to preach the Gospel. His followers must reflect the same heart.

Today, determine that you will never stand against God's purpose. Instead, become an encourager, a kingdom builder, and a faithful servant who opens doors for others to glorify God.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John wrote this letter to commend Gaius for his love and hospitality while exposing the sinful conduct of Diotrephes. Diotrephes was a church leader who desired prominence rather than servanthood. His pride caused him to reject faithful believers, speak evil against God's servants, discourage others from showing kindness, and even expel those who obeyed God instead of him.

The statement, "He himself does not receive the brethren," reveals more than a lack of hospitality. It exposes a hardened heart that resists God's work. Throughout Scripture, God identifies Himself with His servants. Rejecting those whom God sends is often equivalent to rejecting God Himself (Matthew 10:40).

Many people today attend church yet resist correction, refuse fellowship, reject genuine ministers because of jealousy, tribalism, personal offenses, or selfish ambition. Some close their hearts to God's messengers while opening their doors to worldly influences.

God desires believers who welcome His Word, honour faithful servants, encourage Christian fellowship, and demonstrate genuine love. Hospitality is not merely providing food or accommodation; it is receiving God's people with humility, love, and respect.

The opposite of Diotrephes is Jesus Christ, who welcomed sinners, restored the broken, and embraced those rejected by society. Every believer should imitate Christ rather than Diotrephes.

Whenever pride rules the heart, love disappears. Wherever Christ reigns, humility produces acceptance, unity, and peace.

THE DANGER OF UNCHECKED PRIDE AND A REBELLIOUS HEART

INTRODUCTION

"…and not content therewith…"

This phrase reveals the progressive nature of sin. Diotrephes was not satisfied with speaking maliciously against God's servants. His pride drove him further into rebellion. He refused to receive faithful believers, prevented others from doing so, and even expelled obedient members from the church. Sin rarely remains at one level. When pride, selfish ambition, and rebellion are not confronted, they grow into greater acts of wickedness.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The story of Diotrephes is one of the strongest warnings in the New Testament against spiritual pride. John did not accuse him of adultery, stealing, or murder. His greatest problem was his desire to be first (3 John 1:9). Pride became the root from which every other evil action sprang.

The expression "and not content with that" teaches that unchecked sin always seeks expansion. Pride becomes slander. Slander becomes rejection of godly authority. Rejection becomes oppression of faithful believers. Eventually, the offender believes he is defending God's work while actually fighting against God Himself.

Many believers begin with seemingly "small" sins: refusing correction, seeking recognition, desiring control, criticizing spiritual leaders, or refusing forgiveness. If repentance is delayed, these attitudes become habits, and habits become strongholds.

The Christian life is a life of continual humility before Christ. Jesus, though Lord of all, humbled Himself and became obedient unto death (Philippians 2:5–8). Greatness in God's Kingdom is measured by humility, service, obedience, and love, not position, titles, influence, or applause.

The warning is clear: never allow your heart to become "not content." Refuse to let one sinful attitude develop into greater rebellion. Deal with pride immediately. Welcome correction. Love the brethren. Honour God's servants. Walk in humility daily.

BEWARE OF PRATING AGAINST OTHERS WITH MALICIOUS WORDS

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

"Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church." — 3 John 1:10 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John exposed the sinful conduct of Diotrephes, a man whose pride led him to attack faithful believers with malicious words. The phrase "prating against us with malicious words" describes speaking evil, spreading false accusations, slander, gossip, defamation, and destructive criticism intended to injure another person's reputation.

Malicious speech is not merely a problem of the tongue; it is a symptom of a heart that has drifted from God. Jesus taught that "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). Therefore, harmful speech reveals hidden pride, jealousy, bitterness, hatred, selfish ambition, unforgiveness, or rebellion.

The devil is called the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10). Whenever believers deliberately spread lies, exaggerate faults, assassinate character, or rejoice in another person's downfall, they unknowingly cooperate with Satan's agenda rather than Christ's ministry of reconciliation.

God calls His children to speak words that heal, encourage, restore, comfort, correct in love, and glorify Him. Every careless word will be accounted for on the Day of Judgment (Matthew 12:36). Therefore, believers must continually surrender their hearts and tongues to the Holy Spirit.

True Christianity is demonstrated not only by powerful prayers but also by sanctified speech. A transformed heart produces transformed words. Before speaking, ask yourself:

• Is it true?
• Is it necessary?
• Is it loving?
• Will it glorify God?
• Will it build someone up rather than destroy them?

Let every conversation become an opportunity to reflect Christ rather than to promote division.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Spark That Burned the Forest

A small spark carelessly dropped into a dry forest quickly grew into an uncontrollable wildfire that destroyed thousands of trees.

Lesson:

One malicious statement can destroy years of trust, friendships, ministries, families, and destinies. Guard every word before it leaves your mouth.

2. The Pillow of Feathers

A man who had spread false rumours sought forgiveness. He was told to scatter feathers from a pillow into the wind and then gather every feather back. He soon realized it was impossible.

Lesson:

Words released cannot always be retrieved. Even after repentance, damaged reputations may take years to heal. Speak carefully.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, have you wounded people with gossip, slander, false accusations, harsh criticism, or malicious conversations? Today the Lord calls you to genuine repentance. Confess your sins, seek forgiveness from God, and where possible make peace with those you have injured.

PERSONAL DEEP REPENTANCE

Merciful Father, I acknowledge that I have not always honoured You with my words. Cleanse my heart from pride, bitterness, jealousy, anger, and every corrupt motive. Let the blood of Jesus purify my speech. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.

PERSONAL PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, forgive every careless, hurtful, slanderous, and malicious word I have spoken. Wash me with Your precious blood. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and teach me to speak words of life, truth, grace, and encouragement. Let my mouth become an instrument of righteousness. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

For the next 24 hours, refuse to speak negatively about anyone. Instead, intentionally encourage at least three people with sincere, grace-filled words.
