WHEN PRIDE SHUTS THE DOOR TO GOD'S SERVANTS

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

"Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church." - 3 John 1:10 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John wrote this letter to commend Gaius for his love and hospitality while exposing the sinful conduct of Diotrephes. Diotrephes was a church leader who desired prominence rather than servanthood. His pride caused him to reject faithful believers, speak evil against God's servants, discourage others from showing kindness, and even expel those who obeyed God instead of him.

The statement, "He himself does not receive the brethren," reveals more than a lack of hospitality. It exposes a hardened heart that resists God's work. Throughout Scripture, God identifies Himself with His servants. Rejecting those whom God sends is often equivalent to rejecting God Himself (Matthew 10:40).

Many people today attend church yet resist correction, refuse fellowship, reject genuine ministers because of jealousy, tribalism, personal offenses, or selfish ambition. Some close their hearts to God's messengers while opening their doors to worldly influences.

God desires believers who welcome His Word, honour faithful servants, encourage Christian fellowship, and demonstrate genuine love. Hospitality is not merely providing food or accommodation; it is receiving God's people with humility, love, and respect.

The opposite of Diotrephes is Jesus Christ, who welcomed sinners, restored the broken, and embraced those rejected by society. Every believer should imitate Christ rather than Diotrephes.

Whenever pride rules the heart, love disappears. Wherever Christ reigns, humility produces acceptance, unity, and peace.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Closed Door

A missionary travelled hundreds of kilometres expecting help from a church leader. Instead of receiving him, the leader shut the door because he feared losing influence. Another humble family welcomed the missionary into their home. Through that simple act, many souls in the community later received Christ.

Lesson:

God often blesses those who receive His servants with sincere hearts.

2. The Empty Chair

A church reserved seats for influential visitors while neglecting ordinary believers. One elderly widow was ignored until another member welcomed her warmly. Years later, her testimony transformed many lives within that church.

God values love above status.

PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE

Lord, forgive me wherever pride, bitterness, prejudice, jealousy, or selfish ambition has prevented me from loving Your people. Remove every spirit of Diotrephes from my heart and make me a true reflection of Christ.

PERSONAL DEEP REPENTANCE

Father, I confess every hidden arrogance, unforgiveness, criticism, and resistance toward Your servants. Wash me thoroughly by the blood of Jesus. Break every root of pride within me. Replace my heart of stone with a heart filled with compassion, humility, and sincere love.

PERSONAL PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Merciful Father, I repent of every attitude that dishonours You. Forgive me for rejecting correction, despising Your servants, and withholding love from fellow believers. Let the Holy Spirit renew my heart completely. Help me to receive Your people as I receive Christ Himself. Let my life become a vessel of peace, unity, and encouragement. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Open your heart to God's people. Encourage someone today. Refuse pride, criticism, division, and selfish ambition. Become a source of blessing wherever God places you.

DEEP REFLECTION

If Christ evaluated my relationship with fellow believers today, would He see the humility of Gaius or the pride of Diotrephes? Am I building God's kingdom or protecting my own reputation?

PERSONAL WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Do not become discouraged if others reject you for following Christ. God sees your faithfulness. Continue walking in love, welcoming His people, and serving with humility. Your reward is secure with the Lord, and He will honour those who honour Him.

Earthly influence is temporary, but eternal rewards belong to those who faithfully love Christ and His people. Let every decision today be made with eternity in mind.

WORDS OF TRUTH

A heart that rejects God's people will eventually resist God's voice, but a humble heart that receives Christ's servants receives Christ Himself. True greatness in God's Kingdom is measured not by position or recognition, but by humility, love, hospitality, and faithful obedience to the truth.
