𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
THE DANGER OF UNCHECKED PRIDE AND A REBELLIOUS HEART

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

"Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church." - 3 John 1:10 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

3 John 1:10 (KJV)

"…and not content therewith…"

This phrase reveals the progressive nature of sin. Diotrephes was not satisfied with speaking maliciously against God's servants. His pride drove him further into rebellion. He refused to receive faithful believers, prevented others from doing so, and even expelled obedient members from the church. Sin rarely remains at one level. When pride, selfish ambition, and rebellion are not confronted, they grow into greater acts of wickedness.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The story of Diotrephes is one of the strongest warnings in the New Testament against spiritual pride. John did not accuse him of adultery, stealing, or murder. His greatest problem was his desire to be first (3 John 1:9). Pride became the root from which every other evil action sprang.

The expression "and not content with that" teaches that unchecked sin always seeks expansion. Pride becomes slander. Slander becomes rejection of godly authority. Rejection becomes oppression of faithful believers. Eventually, the offender believes he is defending God's work while actually fighting against God Himself.

Many believers begin with seemingly "small" sins: refusing correction, seeking recognition, desiring control, criticizing spiritual leaders, or refusing forgiveness. If repentance is delayed, these attitudes become habits, and habits become strongholds.

The Christian life is a life of continual humility before Christ. Jesus, though Lord of all, humbled Himself and became obedient unto death (Philippians 2:5–8). Greatness in God's Kingdom is measured by humility, service, obedience, and love, not position, titles, influence, or applause.

The warning is clear: never allow your heart to become "not content." Refuse to let one sinful attitude develop into greater rebellion. Deal with pride immediately. Welcome correction. Love the brethren. Honour God's servants. Walk in humility daily.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand the destructive progression of sin.
  2. To recognize pride as the root of many spiritual failures.
  3. To cultivate genuine humility before God.
  4. To honour God-ordained spiritual authority.
  5. To avoid malicious speech.
  6. To receive fellow believers with love.
  7. To become a peacemaker in God's house.
  8. To walk in obedience to God's Word.
  9. To pursue holiness without compromise.
  10. To finish life's journey prepared for eternity.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Little Crack in the Dam

A tiny crack appeared in a large dam. It seemed insignificant, so it was ignored. Over time, water enlarged the crack until the entire structure collapsed, destroying everything downstream.

Lessons

  • Small sins become great disasters.
  • Immediate repentance prevents greater destruction.
  • Spiritual vigilance preserves God's work.

2. The Poisonous Root

A gardener ignored a small poisonous root beneath beautiful flowers. Months later, the poison spread underground, killing the entire garden.

Lessons

  • Pride grows beneath the surface.
  • Hidden sins eventually become visible.
  • Only sincere repentance removes the root.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, examine your heart honestly before God. Is there pride? Bitterness? A desire for recognition? Unforgiveness? Resistance to correction? Do not allow today's hidden attitude to become tomorrow's public disgrace. Come to Christ with a broken and contrite heart. His mercy is available to restore everyone who genuinely repents.

PERSONAL DEEP REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that You know every hidden motive of my heart. I confess every seed of pride, rebellion, selfish ambition, envy, unforgiveness, harsh speech, and disobedience. Remove every evil root before it produces destruction. Give me the humility of Christ and teach me to walk in sincere love and obedience every day.

PERSONAL PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father, I confess my sins before You. Forgive me for every act of pride, arrogance, rebellion, selfish ambition, and every word that has wounded others. Wash me in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Help me to honour You in my thoughts, words, and actions. Let my life reflect the humility of Christ until the day I see You face to face. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

HYMN

Take My Life, and Let It Be
Frances Ridley Havergal (1836–1879)

Message
This hymn is a heartfelt prayer of complete surrender, consecration, humility, and obedience. It perfectly complements today's call to reject pride and yield every area of life to Christ.

Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Ask God to reveal any hidden pride or rebellious attitude in your heart. If the Holy Spirit convicts you to apologize, forgive someone, submit to godly correction, or restore a broken relationship, obey Him today without delay.

DEEP REFLECTION

What hidden attitude in my life could become "and not content with that" if I refuse to surrender it to God today?

PERSONAL WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God delights in restoring those who humble themselves before Him. No matter how far you may have wandered through pride or stubbornness, His grace is sufficient to forgive, heal, and transform you. Choose humility today, and you will experience His peace, favour, and lasting joy.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Many will stand before Christ believing they served Him faithfully, yet hidden pride may have corrupted their service. Live every day with eternity in mind. Seek God's approval above human applause, and remain faithful until the end.

PERSONAL CLOSING DECLARATION

Today, I reject every spirit of pride, rebellion, selfish ambition, and spiritual arrogance. I choose the way of humility, love, obedience, forgiveness, and faithful service. My heart belongs completely to Jesus Christ, and by His grace I shall remain faithful until the end. Amen.

  6. Help me to love and receive fellow believers sincerely, in the name of Jesus.
  7. Teach me to submit joyfully to Your will, in the name of Jesus.
  8. Restore every area where pride has caused damage in my life, in the name of Jesus.
  9. Keep me faithful until I finish my Christian race victoriously, in the name of Jesus.
  10. Let my life continually bring honour and glory to Jesus Christ, in the name of Jesus.

PERSONAL PROPHETIC DECLARATION

I declare that every stronghold of pride, rebellion, and self-exaltation is broken over my life by the power of the Holy Spirit. I shall walk in humility, wisdom, love, and obedience. My heart shall remain tender before God. I will not fall through unchecked sin, but I shall grow daily in the likeness of Jesus Christ. The grace of God shall preserve me, and I shall finish well and receive the crown of life, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

WORDS OF TRUTH

Unchecked pride never remains alone, it always demands more. A heart that refuses correction soon resists truth, rejects love, and opposes God's purpose. Therefore, humble yourself before the Lord today. Let Christ reign where self once ruled, and your life will become a testimony of His grace, bearing fruit that endures into eternity.
