THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Jan 17th, 2026
𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
WHOEVER KEEPS HIS COMMANDMENTS ABIDES IN GOD, AND GOD IN HIM!
KEY VERSE
Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us. - 1 John 3:24 (NKJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
To abide in God is not merely to profess faith, but to live in conscious, obedient fellowship with Him.
The Apostle John reveals a profound spiritual truth:
When a believer keeps God’s commandments, not selectively, not conveniently, but lovingly, such a person dwells in God’s presence, and God actively dwells in them.
God’s commandments are not burdensome rules; they are expressions of His nature and will (1 John 5:3).
Obedience aligns the believer’s heart with God’s heart.
Abiding is relational, not mechanical.
It speaks of union, communion, and continuous fellowship:
- Where obedience thrives, divine presence is sustained.
- Where obedience is neglected, intimacy is weakened.
This abiding produces assurance, spiritual fruitfulness, boldness in prayer, victory over sin, and visible transformation.
The Holy Spirit becomes the confirming witness that God truly lives in us (1 John 3:24b).
BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THIS TRUTH
To establish intimacy with God through obedience (John 15:10)
To cultivate a holy lifestyle pleasing to God (1 Peter 1:15–16)
To produce spiritual fruitfulness (John 15:5)
To strengthen assurance of salvation (1 John 2:3)
To develop Christlike character (Romans 8:29)
To empower believers for effective prayer (1 John 3:22)
To preserve believers from lawlessness and deception (Matthew 7:21–23)
To foster love for God and others (John 14:21)
To manifest the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:10)
To prepare believers for eternal fellowship with God (Revelation 21:3)
CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE WHO ABIDE IN GOD
ILLUSTRATIONS
1. The Plug and the Power Source
A device only functions when plugged into power.
Once disconnected, it becomes useless.
Lesson:
Obedience is the spiritual connection that keeps us plugged into God’s power.
2. The Vine and the Branch (John 15)
A branch draws life only by remaining attached to the vine.
Lesson:
Keeping God’s commandments is how we remain spiritually connected, nourished, and fruitful.
A CALL TO REPENTANCE
Beloved, examine your walk.
Are there commandments you admire but do not obey?
Areas where conscience has grown dull?
God calls you today, not to shame, but to return to obedient fellowship.
Abiding begins with surrender.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Lord, I acknowledge that partial obedience is disobedience.
I confess my complacency, selective hearing, and self-will.
I repent of living close to You in words but far in deeds.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Father, in the name of Jesus,
I repent of every act of disobedience, known and unknown.
Wash me by the blood of Jesus.
Renew my heart with a love for Your commandments.
Restore my fellowship with You.
Let my life abide fully in You again,
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

HYMN
Trust and Obey
John H. Sammis (1887)
1. When we walk with the Lord
in the light of his word,
what a glory he sheds on our way!
While we do his good will,
he abides with us still,
and with all who will trust and obey.
Refrain:
Trust and obey,
for there's no other way
to be happy in Jesus,
but to trust and obey.
2. Not a burden we bear,
not a sorrow we share,
but our toil he doth richly repay;
not a grief or a loss,
not a frown or a cross,
but is blest if we trust and obey.
3. But we never can prove
the delights of his love
until all on the altar we lay;
for the favor he shows,
for the joy he bestows,
are for them who will trust and obey.
4. Then in fellowship sweet
we will sit at his feet,
or we'll walk by his side in the way;
what he says we will do,
where he sends we will go;
never fear, only trust and obey.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Identify one command of God you have delayed obeying.
Act on it today, fully and joyfully.
DEEP REFLECTION
What areas of your life reveal closeness to God in speech but distance in action?
True abiding is proven in daily obedience, not occasional emotion.
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
God does not demand obedience to reject you, He invites it to keep you close.
Every step of obedience deepens intimacy and releases grace.
ETERNITY IN VIEW
Abiding prepares us for eternal dwelling with God.
Those who walk with Him now will live with Him forever.
Obedience today echoes into eternity.
