THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Dec 15th, 2025
𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
DO NOT BE SURPRISED!
KEY VERSE
“Do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.”
— 1 John 3:13 (NIV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The phrase “Do not be surprised” is a spiritual call to maturity, discernment, and preparedness.
Scripture repeatedly warns believers that following Christ will invite resistance, misunderstanding, persecution, and spiritual warfare.
Christianity is not a life insulated from trouble; it is a life empowered to overcome it.
Jesus Himself prepared His disciples ahead of time so that adversity would not shake their faith (John 16:1).
When hardship comes, it should not create confusion but confirmation that we belong to Christ.
The surprise is not opposition; the surprise would be the absence of it in a fallen world.
To be “not surprised” means:
- We understand the nature of the world
- We recognize the cost of discipleship
- We trust God’s sovereignty in trials
- We remain anchored in eternal hope
A surprised believer is often shaken; a prepared believer is strengthened.
God uses trials to purify faith, deepen dependence, and produce eternal glory (1 Peter 1:6–7).

ILLUSTRATIONS
1. THE TRAINED SOLDIER
A trained soldier does not panic at the sound of gunfire.
Why?
Because he has been prepared.
He expects resistance and knows how to respond.
Lesson:
A believer trained in God’s Word does not collapse when trials come.
Expectation removes fear; preparation produces victory.
2. THE ROOTED TREE
A tree with shallow roots falls during storms.
But a deeply rooted tree bends and survives.
Lesson:
Storms do not destroy believers, shallowness does.
Deep roots in Christ prevent surprise and spiritual collapse.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
Have you expected comfort where God promised a cross?
Have you questioned God because of trials instead of trusting Him?
Have you been offended by hardship?
Today, the Spirit calls you to repentance, not for suffering, but for misunderstanding the cost of discipleship.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Lord, forgive me for wanting the crown without the cross.
Forgive me for murmuring when trials came.
I repent for every time I doubted Your faithfulness in difficulty.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
I repent of spiritual complacency and false expectations.
Cleanse my heart from fear, offense, and unbelief.
Teach me to stand firm when tested and to trust You completely.
I surrender my comfort, expectations, and will to You.
Strengthen me to walk faithfully, whatever the cost.

HYMN
When Peace Like a River
(It Is Well with My Soul)
Horatio G. Spafford (1873)
1. When peace like a river attendeth my way,
when sorrows like sea billows roll;
whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,
"It is well, it is well with my soul."
Chorus
It is well with my soul;
it is well, it is well with my soul.
2. Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control:
that Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
and has shed his own blood for my soul.
3. My sin oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
my sin, not in part, but the whole,
is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more;
praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!
4. O Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
the clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
the trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend;
even so, it is well with my soul.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Face your current challenge without complaint.
Instead, thank God for His refining work and declare His faithfulness aloud.
DEEP REFLECTION
Am I surprised by hardship because I am shallow in understanding, or anchored in Christ?
What expectations do I need to realign with God’s Word?
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
Beloved, trials do not mean God has left you.
They mean He trusts you with deeper glory.
Heaven is watching your response.
ETERNITY IN VIEW
This world is temporary.
Every tear, rejection, and trial is momentary.
Eternity will reveal that nothing endured for Christ was wasted.
CLOSING DECLARATION
I will not be surprised by trials.
I am rooted, prepared, and anchored in Christ.
What God has begun in me, He will surely complete.
