THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Oct 1st, 2025
𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
THE WORLD IS PASSING AWAY, AND THE LUST OF IT!
KEY VERSE
“And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” – 1 John 2:17 (NKJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The world, with all its pleasures, riches, and pride, looks attractive, but it is temporary.
Like smoke that rises and disappears, so are the fleeting desires of this present age.
The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16) are powerful forces that entangle many. Yet God warns that all these will perish.
The believer’s true treasure is eternal, found in Christ Jesus.
While the world promises satisfaction, it always leaves emptiness.
But when we live in the will of God, we inherit eternal life that never fades.
To anchor our lives in worldly desires is to build on sinking sand, but to live in obedience to God is to build on the Rock that stands forever (Matthew 7:24-25).
The truth is simple:
The world is fading away, but those who cling to God will live eternally with Him.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE WHO OVERCOME THE WORLD
- Separation from Worldliness – (Romans 12:2) Not conformed to this world but transformed by renewing of the mind.
- Love for God above All – (Matthew 22:37) Loving God wholeheartedly.
- Walking by the Spirit – (Galatians 5:16) Overcoming the desires of the flesh.
- Heavenly-Mindedness – (Colossians 3:2) Setting minds on things above, not on earthly things.
- Contentment – (1 Timothy 6:6) Godliness with contentment is great gain.
- Obedience to God’s Will – (John 14:21) Demonstrating love through obedience.
- Victory Through Faith – (1 John 5:4) Overcoming the world by faith in Christ.
ILLUSTRATIONS
1. The Fading Flower
A little boy admired a bright flower in the field and plucked it to keep.
In two days, it withered and lost its beauty.
His father said,
That is how the world’s pleasures are, they fade quickly.
Lesson: Only what is rooted in God lasts forever (Isaiah 40:8).
2. The Sinking Ship
A wealthy merchant loaded treasures onto a grand ship.
Midway, the ship struck a rock and began sinking.
In desperation, he tried saving his gold but lost both his wealth and his life.
Lesson: The world and its possessions are sinking; only those who cling to Christ will be saved (Mark 8:36).

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Father in Heaven,
I confess that I have been distracted by the fleeting pleasures of this world.
Forgive me for lust, pride, and misplaced priorities.
Cleanse me and renew my heart to seek first Your Kingdom.

From today, help me live for eternity, not for vanity.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

HYMN
Take the World, But Give Me Jesus
~ Fanny J. Crosby, 1879
Take the world, but give me Jesus,
All its joys are but a name;
But His love abideth ever,
Through eternal years the same.
Chorus:
Oh, the height and depth of mercy!
Oh, the length and breadth of love!
Oh, the fullness of redemption,
Pledge of endless life above!
2. Take the world, but give me Jesus,
Sweetest comfort of my soul;
With my Saviour watching o’er me,
I can sing tho billows roll.
3. Take the world, but give me Jesus,
Let me view His constant smile;
Then thru out my pilgrim journey
Light will cheer me all the while.
4. Take the world, but give me Jesus,
In His cross my trust shall be;
Till, with clearer, brighter vision,
Face to face my Lord I see.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Do an honest self-check:
What worldly desire competes with your devotion to God?
Surrender it in prayer today and replace it with a practice of eternal value (e.g., prayer, giving, Bible study).
DEEP REFLECTION
The glitter of this world is a trap, but the glory of eternity is forever.
The question is:
Will you waste your life chasing fading pleasures, or will you invest it in eternal treasures?
CLOSING DECLARATION
I declare that I will not love the world or the lust within it.
My heart is fixed on Christ, my treasure is in heaven, and my joy is in doing the will of God.
I am crucified with Christ, and I live for His glory.
Amen!
