THE OLD COMMANDMENT IS THE WORD

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
September 19th, 2025

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
THE OLD COMMANDMENT IS THE WORD!

KEY VERSE

“Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.”1 John 2:7 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

God’s Word is not a passing trend; it is the eternal commandment that has been given “from the beginning.”

John reminds believers that the “old commandment” is the very Word of life, calling us to love God and love one another (Matthew 22:37-40).

In every generation, people are tempted to search for something new, something that fits their preferences.

Yet, God’s Word remains the same, unchanging and powerful.

The old commandment is a call to live in obedience, holiness, and love.

Walking in this Word is not bondage; it is freedom.

Jesus said,

“If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32).

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE OLD COMMANDMENT (THE WORD)

  1. Unchanging – “Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.” (Psalm 119:89)
  2. Life-Giving – “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.” (John 6:63)
  3. Pure & Perfect – “The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul.” (Psalm 19:7)
  4. Light & Guide – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
  5. Foundation of Love – “This is the message… that we should love one another.” (1 John 3:11)
  6. Transforming – “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)
  7. Everlasting – “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Ancient Map

A traveler searched for a modern shortcut through a wilderness but ignored the old map passed down through generations.

He got lost and almost perished until someone showed him that the ancient map was still accurate, leading safely to the destination.

Lesson: The Word of God is timeless.

Ignoring it for “new ways” leads to ruin, but trusting it brings direction and life.

2. The Lighthouse

A ship captain once mocked the old lighthouse, thinking its light was outdated compared to new gadgets.

But during a storm, when all technology failed, the ancient lighthouse saved the vessel from destruction.

Lesson: God’s Word is the steadfast light that never fails, even when modern voices fade away.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Have you sidelined the Word of God while chasing personal trends or opinions?

Have you forgotten the “old commandment” to love and obey?

Return to the Word that gives life!

DEEP REPENTANCE

Pause and let the Holy Spirit search your heart.

Confess where you’ve neglected Scripture, resisted its correction, or failed to walk in love.

Ask God to restore your hunger for His Word.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father,

I come humbly, acknowledging that I have often ignored or treated Your Word lightly.

Forgive me for choosing my ways above Yours.

Cleanse me from pride, distraction, and disobedience.

Restore in me a pure heart that treasures Your commandments and delights in Your truth.

From today, I choose to walk in Your Word with love and obedience.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

REFLECTION SCRIPTURES

  • Deuteronomy 6:5-6 – Love the LORD your God with all your heart… these words shall be in your heart.
  • Joshua 1:8 – Meditate on the Book of the Law day and night.
  • Psalm 119:11 – I have hidden Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is God-breathed and equips for every good work.

HYMN

How Firm a Foundation
~ R. Keen; K.; George Keith (1787)

1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled.

2. Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.

3. When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

4. When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

5. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Spend at least 20 minutes reading and meditating on a Scripture passage.

Write down one command or promise you will act on today.

DEEP REFLECTION

The old commandment is not dull or irrelevant, it is alive, sharp, and dependable.

Will you build your life on shifting opinions or on the sure foundation of the eternal Word?

CLOSING DECLARATION

I affirm today that God’s Word is my foundation, my compass, and my delight.

I will treasure it in my heart, obey its commands, and share its truth with others.

I will walk in love and remain steadfast in the Word of Life.

Amen.
