"I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:" - 3 John 1:13 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John concludes his third epistle with a remarkable statement: "I had many things to write." This reveals that there were still many important issues he desired to communicate. Yet, instead of writing everything, he chose to wait until he could meet Gaius personally.

This teaches that not every truth is best communicated through writing. Some matters require personal fellowship, careful explanation, spiritual discernment, compassion, accountability, and wisdom.

In today's digital world, people often rush to communicate through text messages, emails, social media posts, and public comments. Unfortunately, many relationships, ministries, families, and churches have been damaged because important conversations were reduced to written words without love, tone, understanding, or personal interaction.

John understood that Christian fellowship is more than exchanging information; it is about building lives. Face-to-face fellowship strengthens faith, encourages believers, resolves misunderstandings, and deepens spiritual relationships.

The statement "I had many things to write" also reminds believers that wisdom includes knowing what to say, when to say it, how to say it, and when silence is better than speaking.

Jesus Himself often demonstrated this wisdom. Sometimes He answered questions directly. Sometimes He remained silent. Sometimes He taught privately rather than publicly because every audience was different.

The mature believer does not speak merely because there is something to say. Instead, he speaks only what glorifies God, edifies others, and accomplishes His purpose.

As followers of Christ, our conversations should always be filled with grace, truth, humility, wisdom, and love. Our goal should never be merely to express ourselves but to build others up and bring glory to God.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

One of the greatest treasures a believer can possess is a godly testimony. John commended Demetrius because his life reflected the truth of God's Word. His reputation was not built on popularity, wealth, position, or human achievements but on a consistent life of obedience to Christ. His conduct confirmed his confession.

Today, many people profess Christ with their lips, but their lifestyles contradict their profession. The world is not merely listening to our sermons; it is watching our lives. God desires that every believer becomes a living epistle that reflects His holiness, love, faithfulness, humility, and integrity.

The statement, "And you know that our testimony is true," points to credibility built over time. John's testimony carried weight because his life, ministry, and relationship with God had consistently demonstrated truth. Likewise, our words should be supported by righteous living.

A true testimony is not created by human effort alone. It is produced through daily fellowship with Christ, continual repentance, obedience to Scripture, dependence on the Holy Spirit, and unwavering faithfulness even during trials. Such believers become examples to families, churches, communities, and future generations.

INTRODUCTION

Key Thought: God desires every believer to possess a testimony that speaks both before heaven and before people. A true Christian does not merely profess Christ with words but bears witness through a transformed life, godly character, unwavering integrity, and faithful service.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John presented Demetrius as a believer whose life had become a testimony. He was not praised because of wealth, position, influence, or eloquence. Rather, he had earned a good report because his life reflected the truth of God's Word.

In today's world, many desire recognition, but God seeks believers whose lives testify of His grace. Your greatest sermon is not always what you preach but how you live. Long after your words are forgotten, your character continues to speak.

A believer bears witness through honesty, purity, humility, compassion, faithfulness, forgiveness, generosity, holiness, obedience, and love. Such a person becomes a living epistle that points others to Christ (2 Corinthians 3:2–3).

Demetrius received three powerful witnesses:

A GOOD TESTIMONY FROM THE TRUTH ITSELF

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

"Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true." - 3 John 1:12 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

In this verse, the Apostle John presents Demetrius as an outstanding example of a genuine believer. Remarkably, John says Demetrius had "a good report... of the truth itself." This statement goes beyond human praise. It means that Demetrius' lifestyle agreed completely with God's truth. His conduct, speech, decisions, relationships, and service reflected the Word of God.

Many people have impressive reputations before men but are not approved by God. Others appear religious in public but compromise in private. However, the greatest testimony anyone can receive is not applause from society but approval from the Truth itself, Jesus Christ, who is the Truth (John 14:6), and the Word of God, which is Truth (John 17:17).

The Christian life is not merely about attending church or carrying a Bible. It is about allowing God's truth to shape every aspect of life. A believer whose life contradicts Scripture cannot honestly claim to walk in the truth.

INTRODUCTION

A good testimony is one of the greatest treasures a believer can possess. Demetrius was not known for wealth, fame, miracles, or public influence. Instead, he was known for his godly character. His life agreed with God's truth, and both people and faithful Christian leaders could confidently testify about him. This reminds us that the greatest sermon we preach is the life we live.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

In a world where many seek recognition through titles, popularity, or social media influence, God is searching for men and women whose lives bear a genuine testimony of righteousness.

Very little is written about Demetrius, yet what is written speaks volumes. His name appears only once in Scripture, but his testimony has been preserved forever. He was approved by three witnesses:

• He had a good testimony from people.
• The truth itself testified concerning him.
• Apostle John personally affirmed his character.

This teaches that true Christianity is not merely what we profess but what we consistently practice.

A good testimony cannot be manufactured. It is developed daily through obedience, humility, honesty, faithfulness, love, purity, forgiveness, and steadfast devotion to Christ.

Many people desire God's blessings but neglect godly character. However, character sustains what gifts cannot. God is more interested in who we are becoming than what we are accomplishing.

Every believer should ask:

• What testimony am I leaving behind?
• What would my family say about my Christian life?
• What would my workplace, church, neighbours, and heaven testify concerning me?

The testimony that matters most is not human applause but God's approval. Our lives should reflect Christ so consistently that even those who oppose us cannot deny our integrity.

May we become believers whose lives preach Christ even when our mouths are silent.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John gives every believer a simple but powerful test of genuine Christianity. It is not enough to profess Christ with our lips; our lives must reveal His nature. The statement, "He who does evil has not seen God," does not mean that a believer never struggles with temptation or falls into sin. Rather, it means that a lifestyle of unrepentant evil proves that a person has never truly known God personally.

Throughout Scripture, seeing God signifies having a living relationship with Him. Those who know God increasingly reflect His holiness, mercy, love, humility, truthfulness, and righteousness. Genuine salvation produces visible transformation. Good works do not save us, but they are evidence that Christ has already changed our hearts.

John wrote these words because there were believers who were being influenced by wicked leaders like Diotrephes, whose pride, selfish ambition, and refusal to receive God's servants contradicted the gospel. John urged believers not to imitate evil examples but to follow godly ones like Demetrius.

Our world constantly celebrates compromise, dishonesty, immorality, greed, revenge, and pride. Many excuse sinful lifestyles while claiming to know God. However, Scripture clearly teaches that those who continually practice evil without repentance demonstrate that they have never truly experienced the transforming grace of God.

The Christian life is a daily choice. Every decision either reflects Christ or reflects the world. Every believer must ask: Does my conduct prove that I belong to God?

Knowing God is more than attending church, quoting Scriptures, giving offerings, or holding church positions. It is walking daily in obedience to Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. When Christ truly lives in us, His character becomes increasingly visible in us.

Today, God calls every believer to reject every appearance of evil and pursue righteousness. Let your life become a testimony that you have truly seen, known, and belong to the living God.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John lovingly exhorts believers not to imitate evil but to imitate good. Every believer is constantly surrounded by examples, some godly and others ungodly. The warning is clear: do not copy the lifestyle, values, or conduct of those who reject God's ways. Instead, imitate those whose lives reflect Christ.

Doing good is not merely performing random acts of kindness; it is living in obedience to God's Word, loving others sincerely, speaking the truth, forgiving offenders, showing mercy, practicing integrity, and seeking God's glory in every area of life.

John states that "He who does good is of God." Genuine goodness flows from a transformed heart. Salvation changes a person's character. While good works do not earn salvation, they are the evidence that one truly belongs to God (Ephesians 2:8–10). A life consistently marked by hatred, deceit, wickedness, and rebellion reveals a heart that has not truly known Christ.

Our homes, workplaces, churches, businesses, schools, and communities should experience God's love through our words, attitudes, and actions. We become the light of the world when we consistently choose righteousness over compromise.

In a generation where evil is often celebrated and compromise is normalized, believers must remain unwavering. Every opportunity to forgive instead of retaliate, to give instead of exploit, to tell the truth instead of lie, and to love instead of hate proves that Christ truly reigns within us.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Good Tree and Its Fruit

A healthy mango tree naturally produces sweet mangoes. It does not struggle to produce its fruit because its nature determines its harvest.

Lesson: A heart transformed by Christ naturally produces righteous living. Good works are the fruit of genuine salvation.

2. The Light in a Dark Street

One bright streetlight changes the atmosphere of an entire dark street. Though darkness surrounds it, its light remains visible.

Lesson: One committed believer can influence an entire family, office, school, church, or community through consistent godly living.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Examine your life honestly before God. Have your words, actions, relationships, business dealings, and attitudes reflected Christ? Repent of every hidden sin, compromise, bitterness, dishonesty, hypocrisy, and disobedience. Ask the Holy Spirit to transform your heart completely.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Father, I acknowledge that many times I have failed to reflect Your goodness. I repent of every selfish ambition, pride, unforgiveness, deceit, anger, and every work of darkness. Wash me thoroughly by the precious blood of Jesus. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Let my life become a true reflection of Christ every day.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I confess all my sins before You. Forgive me for every evil thought, word, action, and omission. Cleanse me by Your precious blood. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit.
