DEMETRIUS: A LIFE WITH A GOOD TESTIMONY

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

"Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true."3 John 1:12 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION

A good testimony is one of the greatest treasures a believer can possess. Demetrius was not known for wealth, fame, miracles, or public influence. Instead, he was known for his godly character. His life agreed with God's truth, and both people and faithful Christian leaders could confidently testify about him. This reminds us that the greatest sermon we preach is the life we live.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

In a world where many seek recognition through titles, popularity, or social media influence, God is searching for men and women whose lives bear a genuine testimony of righteousness.

Very little is written about Demetrius, yet what is written speaks volumes. His name appears only once in Scripture, but his testimony has been preserved forever. He was approved by three witnesses:

  • He had a good testimony from people.
  • The truth itself testified concerning him.
  • Apostle John personally affirmed his character.

This teaches that true Christianity is not merely what we profess but what we consistently practice.

A good testimony cannot be manufactured. It is developed daily through obedience, humility, honesty, faithfulness, love, purity, forgiveness, and steadfast devotion to Christ.

Many people desire God's blessings but neglect godly character. However, character sustains what gifts cannot. God is more interested in who we are becoming than what we are accomplishing.

Every believer should ask:

  • What testimony am I leaving behind?
  • What would my family say about my Christian life?
  • What would my workplace, church, neighbours, and heaven testify concerning me?

The testimony that matters most is not human applause but God's approval. Our lives should reflect Christ so consistently that even those who oppose us cannot deny our integrity.

May we become believers whose lives preach Christ even when our mouths are silent.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. A Fragrant Perfume

A bottle of perfume does not announce itself with words; its fragrance reveals its presence. Likewise, a genuine Christian does not merely proclaim faith, his character spreads the fragrance of Christ everywhere he goes.

Lesson:

People may forget our sermons, but they rarely forget our character.

2. The Signature on a Cheque

A signature represents the identity and credibility of the owner. Without authenticity, the cheque has no value. Likewise, our Christian testimony authenticates our profession of faith.

Lesson:

Character gives credibility to our confession.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

If your life has become inconsistent with God's Word, today is the day to return. Repent of hypocrisy, dishonesty, unforgiveness, pride, compromise, secret sins, and every lifestyle that damages your Christian testimony. Jesus is ready to restore every repentant heart.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus, I confess that there have been times my life has not reflected Your holiness. Forgive every hidden sin, every careless word, every dishonest act, every compromise, every prideful attitude, and every failure to represent You faithfully. Cleanse me completely and restore the beauty of true holiness within me.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father, I come before You in sincere repentance. Wash me with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Remove everything that destroys my testimony. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Help me to walk worthy of the Gospel and to glorify You in every area of my life. Let my life become a living testimony of Your grace and truth. In Jesus' name. Amen.

HYMN

Take My Life, and Let It Be
Frances Ridley Havergal (1836–1879)

Theme: Complete consecration and holy living.

Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

This hymn reminds believers to surrender every aspect of life to God so that our testimony continually honours Christ.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Live today in such a way that if someone observed your life for twenty-four hours, they would clearly see Jesus in your words, attitudes, decisions, and actions.

DEEP REFLECTION

If your life were summarized in one sentence like Demetrius', would heaven describe you as someone with a good testimony? What changes should you make today to ensure your character reflects Christ?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God delights in believers who faithfully honour Him even when no one is watching. Continue to walk in truth, humility, love, and obedience. Though the world may overlook your faithfulness, God sees every act of integrity and will reward you in His perfect time.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Our earthly achievements will fade, but our testimony before God will remain forever. Live each day with eternity in mind. Seek not merely the applause of people but the approval of Christ, who will one day say, "Well done, good and faithful servant."

CLOSING DECLARATION

Today, I choose to walk in truth, integrity, humility, holiness, and unwavering faithfulness. My life shall reflect Jesus Christ in every area. I shall maintain a good testimony before God and before people. My character shall glorify Christ all the days of my life. Amen.

PERSONAL PRAYER POINTS

  1. Father, build Christlike character in me daily, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Lord, let my life always reflect Your truth, in the name of Jesus.
  3. Father, remove every stain upon my Christian testimony, in the name of Jesus.
  4. Lord, make me faithful in little and great responsibilities, in the name of Jesus.
  5. Father, help me to walk in humility and integrity always, in the name of Jesus.
  6. Lord, let the fruit of the Holy Spirit be evident in my life, in the name of Jesus.
  7. Father, let my words and actions glorify You continually, in the name of Jesus.
  8. Lord, preserve me from every temptation that would destroy my testimony, in the name of Jesus.
  9. Father, let my life become a blessing and encouragement to many, in the name of Jesus.
  10. Lord, help me finish my Christian race with a good testimony and eternal reward, in the name of Jesus.

PROPHETIC DECLARATION

I declare that from today, your life shall reflect the beauty of Christ. Your testimony shall not be destroyed by sin, compromise, or the enemy. God shall establish your integrity, enlarge your influence for His glory, and make you a shining example of righteousness. You shall finish your race faithfully, and your life shall bring honour to Jesus Christ. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

WORDS OF TRUTH

A life of godly character is greater than earthly fame. Like Demetrius, let your life consistently agree with God's truth so that heaven, the Church, and even the world can testify that you faithfully belong to Jesus Christ. Let your greatest legacy be a testimony that glorifies God and points others to eternal life in Christ.
