BY THIS YOU KNOW THE SPIRIT OF GOD!

KEY VERSE

“By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God…” - 1 John 4:2 (NKJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

In a generation flooded with voices, revelations, prophecies, ideologies, and spiritual claims, God did not leave His children confused or defenseless.

He gave us a clear, eternal test,

“By this you know the Spirit of God.”

The Spirit of God is not known by excitement, eloquence, miracles, or popularity.

He is known by truth, and truth has a name, Jesus Christ.

Any spirit, doctrine, movement, or voice that diminishes, denies, replaces, or redefines who Jesus is cannot be of God, no matter how spiritual it appears.

The Holy Spirit always:

  • Exalts Christ

  • Reveals Christ

  • Submits to the Word of Christ

  • Produces the life and character of Christ

Discerning the Spirit of God is not optional; it is essential for spiritual survival, maturity, and eternal destiny.

  4. Exalts Christ, not man (John 16:14)

  5. Convicts of sin and righteousness (John 16:8)

  7. Promotes love and truth (1 John 4:7–8)

  8. Leads into obedience (Ezekiel 36:27)

  9. Builds unity in Christ (Ephesians 4:3–4)

  10. Affirms Jesus as the only way (John 14:6)

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
MANY FALSE PROPHETS HAVE GONE OUT INTO THE WORLD!

KEY VERSE

“For many false prophets have gone out into the world.”1 John 4:1 (NKJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The warning that many false prophets have gone out into the world is not a distant echo from the early church; it is a living alarm for every generation.

False prophets are not always loud, hostile, or obviously evil.

Often, they sound convincing, spiritual, compassionate, and relevant.

They may quote Scripture, use the name of Jesus, and claim divine authority, yet their message subtly shifts truth, diminishes Christ, or elevates self, gain, or culture above God.

Scripture calls believers to:

The apostle John instructs us to test the spirits because not every spiritual voice is from God.

The standard for testing is Christ-centered truth, the fruit of holiness, alignment with Scripture, and the witness of the Holy Spirit.

In an age of instant messages, viral teachings, and charismatic influence, spiritual maturity is measured by our commitment to truth.

God’s people must love truth more than excitement, accuracy more than popularity, and obedience more than applause.

Truth preserves the soul, anchors faith, and guards eternity.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THIS DEVOTION

  1. To awaken believers to the reality of false prophets (1 John 4:1).

  2. To establish Christ as the ultimate test of truth (1 John 4:2–3).

  3. To ground believers in sound doctrine (2 Timothy 4:3–4).

  4. To cultivate spiritual discernment (Hebrews 5:14).

  5. To expose deceptive teachings and motivations (2 Peter 2:1).

  7. To encourage holiness and obedience (Matthew 7:15–16).

  8. To protect believers from spiritual deception (Matthew 24:24).

  9. To promote maturity and stability in faith (Ephesians 4:14).

  10. To prepare believers for eternal accountability (Matthew 7:21–23).

CHARACTERISTICS OF FALSE PROPHETS

  1. They distort or deny the true nature of Christ (1 John 2:22).

  2. They appeal to human desires and itching ears (2 Timothy 4:3).

  3. They prioritize gain, fame, or power (2 Peter 2:3).

  4. They speak peace without repentance (Jeremiah 6:14).

  5. They lack the fruit of righteousness (Matthew 7:16).

  6. They mix truth with error (Galatians 1:6–7).

  7. They reject correction and accountability (Proverbs 29:1).

  8. They exalt themselves above Christ (Colossians 2:18).

  9. They operate without the fear of God (Romans 16:18).

  10. They lead many astray if not tested (Matthew 24:11).

A well may look clear at the surface, but if the source is contaminated, everyone who drinks becomes sick.

Lesson:

Teaching must be tested at the source, its doctrine, motive, and spirit.

2. The Counterfeit Currency

Counterfeit money often looks real but fails under close inspection.

Lesson:

False prophecy imitates truth but collapses under scriptural testing.

WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD!

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD!

KEY VERSE

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”1 John 4:1

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

We live in an age of many voices, religious, motivational, prophetic, intellectual, and digital.

Not every voice that sounds spiritual is divine.

Not every miracle proves God’s approval.

Not every message that excites the emotions originates from heaven.

Scripture commands believers not to be gullible, but discerning.

The instruction try the spirits is not optional; it is a divine responsibility.

God expects His children to test doctrines, revelations, prophecies, teachings, and influences against His Word, His Spirit, and His character.

Discernment is the safeguard of truth, and truth is the foundation of genuine faith.

Failure to test the spirits leads to deception, confusion, and spiritual captivity.

But obedience to this command leads to maturity, stability, and intimacy with God.

The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Word He inspired.

Whatever is of God will glorify Christ, align with Scripture, and produce righteousness.

Story:
Sheep do not follow every voice; they follow the voice they recognize.

BELOVED, TEST THE SPIRITS!

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Jan 21st, 2026

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
BELOVED, TEST THE SPIRITS!

KEY VERSE

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” - 1 John 4:1

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

In an age of many voices, online, in pulpits, in books, and even within our own thoughts, Scripture lovingly warns us:

Test the spirits.

Not every spiritual-sounding message is from God.

Some are half-truths, others are subtle distortions, and a few are outright deceptions.

God’s people are called beloved because discernment flows from relationship, not suspicion.

Testing the spirits means measuring every teaching, prophecy, impulse, and counsel against the Word of God, the testimony of Jesus Christ, and the fruit it produces.

The Holy Spirit never contradicts Scripture, never diminishes Christ, and never produces ungodly fruit.

Discernment is not cynicism; it is love for truth.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF TESTING THE SPIRITS

  1. To preserve sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16)

  2. To protect believers from deception (Matthew 24:4–5)

Where have emotions replaced truth, popularity replaced doctrine, or convenience replaced obedience?

Today, God calls us back to discernment rooted in love for truth.

We repent of spiritual laziness, itching ears, and selective obedience.
