THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Jan 22nd, 2026
𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD!
KEY VERSE
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…” — 1 John 4:1
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
We live in an age of many voices, religious, motivational, prophetic, intellectual, and digital.
Not every voice that sounds spiritual is divine.
Not every miracle proves God’s approval.
Not every message that excites the emotions originates from heaven.
Scripture commands believers not to be gullible, but discerning.
The instruction “try the spirits” is not optional; it is a divine responsibility.
God expects His children to test doctrines, revelations, prophecies, teachings, and influences against His Word, His Spirit, and His character.
Discernment is the safeguard of truth, and truth is the foundation of genuine faith.
Failure to test the spirits leads to deception, confusion, and spiritual captivity.
But obedience to this command leads to maturity, stability, and intimacy with God.
The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Word He inspired.
Whatever is of God will glorify Christ, align with Scripture, and produce righteousness.
BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF DISCERNING “WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD”
To preserve the purity of the gospel (Galatians 1:6–8)
To protect believers from deception (Matthew 24:4–5)
To maintain sound doctrine (Titus 1:9)
To grow into spiritual maturity (Hebrews 5:14)
To avoid spiritual manipulation (Colossians 2:8)
To uphold the lordship of Christ (Colossians 2:6)
To walk in truth and light (3 John 1:4)
To recognize false prophets (Matthew 7:15)
To remain rooted in Christ (Colossians 2:7)
To please God and not men (Galatians 1:10)

ILLUSTRATIONS
1. THE COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY
Story:
A counterfeit note may look genuine, feel real, and even pass briefly, but it fails the test under close inspection.
Lesson:
Spiritual counterfeits may impress crowds but cannot withstand the test of God’s Word and Spirit.
2. THE VOICE AND THE SHEPHERD
Story:
Sheep do not follow every voice; they follow the voice they recognize.
Lesson:
Those who know God intimately will easily discern what is not of Him (John 10:4–5).
A CALL TO REPENTANCE
Many have accepted teachings without testing, followed leaders without discernment, and embraced experiences without biblical foundation.
God calls us back to His Word, His truth, and His Spirit.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Father, I confess that at times I have believed what felt good instead of what is true.
I have followed voices without testing them by Your Word.
I repent of spiritual laziness, ignorance, and compromise.
Cleanse my heart and sharpen my discernment.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Lord Jesus,
I repent of every form of deception I have embraced knowingly or unknowingly.
Wash me by Your truth.
Realign my heart with Your Word.
Restore spiritual sensitivity within me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Amen.

HYMN
Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
William Williams (1745)
Theme: Divine guidance, dependence on God, and discernment in life’s journey.
1. Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore,
feed me now and evermore.
2. Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield,
ever be my strength and shield.
3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell's Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to you,
I will ever sing to you.
