THE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION: KNOWING YOU BELONG TO GOD
KEY VERSE
“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” - 1 John 5:13 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The Christian faith is not built on uncertainty, fear, or guesswork, it is built on assurance. God does not want His children to live in doubt about their eternal destiny. The Apostle John clearly states that believers can know they have eternal life, not hope, not assume, but know.
This assurance is rooted in faith in Jesus Christ, not in human effort. Eternal life is a gift received through belief, not a reward earned through works (Ephesians 2:8-9). Many believers struggle because they measure their salvation by feelings, performance, or circumstances. But assurance is not based on emotions, it is anchored in God’s Word and His promises.
To “know” you have eternal life means:
- You trust completely in Christ’s finished work.
- You experience transformation in your life.
- You have a growing relationship with God.
- You walk in obedience, not perfection, but direction.
Assurance brings confidence, peace, boldness in prayer, and stability in trials. Without it, a believer becomes spiritually unstable, easily shaken, and vulnerable to fear.
God’s desire is clear: you should live daily with the confidence that you belong to Him, now and forever.

1. THE SEALED DOCUMENT
A man receives a legal document stamped and sealed by the government. Even if he feels uncertain, the seal guarantees its authenticity.
Lesson:
God has “sealed” believers with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). Your assurance is based on God’s seal, not your feelings.
2. THE CHILD AND THE FATHER
A child does not doubt belonging to his father daily; even when corrected, the relationship remains.
Lesson:
Your salvation is a relationship, not a temporary contract. Discipline does not cancel sonship.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
If you are unsure of your salvation, or if you have been living in sin while claiming faith, return to God today. Assurance comes through genuine faith and a surrendered life.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Search your heart. Are you truly trusting Christ, or relying on religion, works, or assumptions? Turn away from doubt, sin, and self-dependence.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Lord Jesus,
I come before You acknowledging my sins and my doubts. I surrender my life fully to You. I believe You died for me and rose again. Cleanse me, renew me, and establish me in the assurance of eternal life. Let Your Spirit bear witness in me that I am Yours.
Amen.

HYMN
BLESSED ASSURANCE
Fanny J. Crosby (1873)
1. Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.
2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending, bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
3. Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
