KEY VERSE

"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." - 1 John 5:7

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

“The Word” is not merely written scripture, it is divine, eternal, and alive. According to 1 John 5:7, the Word is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit. This reveals that the Word carries the full essence, authority, and power of God Himself.

The Word is:

  • Creative (Genesis 1) — God spoke, and creation came into existence.
  • Living (Hebrews 4:12) — It discerns thoughts and intentions.
  • Incarnate (John 1:14) — The Word became flesh.
  • Sustaining (Hebrews 1:3) — It upholds all things.

When you engage with the Word, you are engaging with God directly. Many believers struggle not because God is absent, but because the Word is neglected. The Word is your compass, your weapon, your life-source, and your identity.

To reject the Word is to reject truth. To embrace the Word is to walk in divine alignment, power, and victory.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THE WORD

  1. To reveal God’s nature (John 1:1)

  2. To give life (John 6:63)

  3. To transform minds (Romans 12:2)

  4. To guide decisions (Psalm 119:105)

  5. To sanctify believers (John 17:17)

  6. To build faith (Romans 10:17)

  7. To correct and instruct (2 Timothy 3:16)

  8. To equip for righteousness (2 Timothy 3:17)

  9. To give victory over sin (Psalm 119:11)

  10. To prepare for eternity (1 Peter 1:23)

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD

  1. Eternal – Isaiah 40:8

  2. Powerful – Hebrews 4:12

  3. True – John 17:17

  4. Pure – Psalm 12:6

  5. Unchanging – Matthew 24:35

  6. Life-giving – John 6:63

  7. Light – Psalm 119:105

  8. Faith-building – Romans 10:17

  9. Convicting – Acts 2:37

  10. Restorative – Psalm 19:7

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. THE LAMP IN DARKNESS

A traveler lost in the night finds a lamp. Though the path is still narrow, the light makes each step visible.

Lesson: The Word may not show the entire future, but it gives enough light for your next step.

2. THE MIRROR OF TRUTH

A man looks into a mirror and sees dirt on his face but ignores it. He remains unclean.

Lesson: The Word reveals our true condition; transformation only comes when we act on it.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Return to the Word. Where it has been neglected, dishonored, or ignored, repent. The Word is not optional; it is life.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Father, I acknowledge that I have treated Your Word lightly. I have relied on my understanding instead of Your truth. Cleanse my heart and restore my hunger for Your Word.

HYMN

Holy Bible, Book Divine
John Burton (1803–1877)

A hymn emphasizing the authority, inspiration, and sufficiency of Scripture.

It reminds believers that the Bible is both a guide and a judge.

1. Holy Bible, book divine,
precious treasure, thou art mine;
mine to tell me whence I came;
mine to teach me what I am:

2. Mine to chide me when I stray,
mine to show a Savior's way;
mine art thou to guide my feet;
mine to judge, condemn, acquit.

3. Mine to comfort in distress,
if the Holy Spirit bless;
mine to show by living faith,
we can triumph over death.

4. Mine to tell of joys to come,
and the rebel sinner's doom;
Holy Bible, book divine,
precious treasure, thou art mine.
