DISCERNING THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH: THE INCARNATION AS THE ULTIMATE TEST
KEY VERSE
“And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist…”
— 1 John 4:3 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The confession that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not merely a theological statement, it is the foundation of Christian faith.
The Apostle John presents incarnation as the litmus test of every spirit, teaching, doctrine, and revelation.
To deny the incarnation is to deny:
Jesus did not appear as an illusion or spiritual concept.
He entered human history, wore human flesh, experienced hunger, pain, temptation, suffering, and death, yet without sin.
This truth separates the Spirit of God from the spirit of error.
In an age of spiritual pluralism, mysticism, and “customized faith,” this test remains eternal:
What do you believe about Jesus Christ?
BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THIS TRUTH
To affirm the deity and humanity of Jesus Christ (John 1:14)
To guard believers against deception (1 John 4:1)
To expose false spirits and doctrines (2 John 1:7)
To anchor faith in historical truth, not myth (Luke 1:1–4)
To preserve the doctrine of salvation (Hebrews 2:14)
To reveal God’s love through incarnation (Romans 5:8)
To uphold the authority of Christ (Colossians 2:9)
To establish discernment in the Church (1 Corinthians 12:10)
To defend the Gospel against antichrist systems (1 John 2:22)
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD
Upholds the Word made flesh – John 1:14
Glorifies Christ, not self – John 16:14
Produces truth, not confusion – 1 Corinthians 14:33
Aligns with apostolic doctrine – Acts 2:42
Leads to holiness – Romans 8:13
Bears witness to Christ – John 15:26
Promotes love and obedience – 1 John 5:2–3
Confirms Jesus’ redemptive work – Hebrews 9:14
Prepares believers for Christ’s return – Revelation 22:17
ILLUSTRATIONS
1. The Counterfeit Currency Test
Banks do not study fake money, they master the original.
Likewise, believers discern false spirits by knowing the true Christ.
Lesson:
Intimacy with the real Jesus makes deception obvious.
2. The Bridge That Reached Both Sides
Humanity could not reach God, and God chose not to shout from heaven.
He became the bridge, Jesus in the flesh.
Lesson:
Denying incarnation collapses the bridge of salvation.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
Any belief, teaching, or lifestyle that minimizes Christ’s lordship, humanity, or redemptive work must be confronted.
Intellectual belief without heart surrender is still rebellion.
“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith.” — 2 Corinthians 13:5
DEEP REPENTANCE
Lord, forgive us for:
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Father, in the name of Jesus,
I repent of every belief, thought, or influence that does not align with the truth of Your Son.
I confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, fully God and fully man, crucified, risen, and glorified.
Cleanse my heart from deception and establish me in truth.
I receive mercy and restoration,
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

HYMN
Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Charles Wesley (1739)
Theme: Incarnation, divine humility, and salvation through Christ.
1. Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King:
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!"
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with th'angelic hosts proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Refrain:
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King"
2. Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
late in time behold him come,
offspring of the Virgin's womb:
veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail th'incarnate Deity,
pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus, our Immanuel.
3. Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth,
born to give us second birth.
