BELOVED, DO NOT BELIEVE EVERY SPIRIT!

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Jan 20th, 2026

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
BELOVED, DO NOT BELIEVE EVERY SPIRIT!

KEY VERSE

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God…”1 John 4:1

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Apostle John lovingly warns believers to exercise spiritual discernment.

Not every voice that sounds spiritual is from God.

In every generation, competing messages, some subtle, some persuasive, seek our attention.

Discernment is not suspicion; it is spiritual wisdom anchored in truth.

God calls us to test, to examine teachings, motives, fruit, and alignment with Scripture.

The Holy Spirit never contradicts God’s Word, never diminishes Christ, and never leads us into confusion or compromise.

True faith is both believing and discerning.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To ground believers firmly in the truth of God’s Word (John 17:17).

  2. To cultivate spiritual discernment through the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:14).

  3. To protect the church from deception and false doctrine (Matthew 24:4).

  4. To exalt Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior (1 John 4:2).

  5. To develop maturity in faith (Hebrews 5:14).

  6. To encourage testing of teachings by Scripture (Acts 17:11).

  7. To foster obedience rooted in truth (James 1:22).

  8. To strengthen believers against end-time deception (2 Thessalonians 2:9–10).

  9. To promote godly character and fruit (Galatians 5:22–23).

  10. To preserve unity through truth and love (Ephesians 4:13–15).

CHARACTERISTICS OF DISCERNMENT

  1. Scripture-aligned – Tested by God’s Word (Isaiah 8:20).

  2. Christ-centered – Confesses Jesus as Lord (1 John 4:2-3).

  3. Spirit-led – Guided by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:14).

  4. Fruit-bearing – Produces godly fruit (Matthew 7:16).

  5. Truth-loving – Rejoices in truth, not error (1 Corinthians 13:6).

  6. Humble – Teachable and submissive to God (Proverbs 11:2).

  7. Peace-producing – Leads to God’s peace, not confusion (James 3:17).

  8. Light-giving – Exposes darkness (Ephesians 5:11).

  9. Enduring – Stands firm under pressure (Colossians 2:6–7).

  10. Love-governed – Speaks truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

Truth:

Know God’s Word deeply so false teachings are easily exposed (Psalm 119:105).

2. The Shepherd’s Voice

Lesson:

Sheep follow the shepherd’s voice, not strangers.

Truth:

Intimacy with Christ sharpens discernment (John 10:4–5).

A CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, where have we accepted voices without testing them?

Where have emotions replaced truth?

God calls us back to the authority of His Word and the guidance of His Spirit.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Lord, we confess that at times we have been careless listeners.

We repent of trusting feelings above Scripture, popularity above truth, and convenience above obedience.

Cleanse us and realign our hearts with Your truth.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Merciful Father,

I repent of every instance where I believed a voice not tested by Your Word.

Forgive my ignorance and pride.

Wash me by the blood of Jesus

Renew my mind, sharpen my discernment, and lead me by Your Spirit.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.

HYMN

Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah
William Williams (1745)
A prayerful hymn asking God to lead His people safely through life’s journey in truth.

1. Guide me, O my great Redeemer,
pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but you are mighty;
hold me with your powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
feed me now and evermore,
feed me now and evermore.

2. Open now the crystal fountain,
where the healing waters flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
ever be my strength and shield,
ever be my strength and shield.

3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell's Destruction,
land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to you,
I will ever sing to you.
