WHY DID CAIN MURDER ABEL?

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Dec 12th, 2025

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
WHY DID CAIN MURDER ABEL?

KEY VERSE

“Not as Cain, who was of the wicked one, and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous.”
1 John 3:12

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The story of Cain and Abel is not merely a historical account;

It is a spiritual mirror:

Cain murdered Abel not because Abel offended him, but because Abel’s righteousness exposed Cain’s wickedness.

Jealousy, anger, rebellion, and lack of submission to God eventually opened the door to violence.

Cain’s offering was rejected because his heart was wrong.

Abel brought his best; Cain brought what was convenient.

Instead of repenting, Cain became offended by God’s correction.

This is the root of many spiritual failures today; people defend their pride instead of adjusting their hearts.

The murder was not just physical; it began in the heart long before the act.

God warned Cain:

Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” (Genesis 4:7)

Cain ignored God’s warning, surrendered to sin, and became the first murderer.

When the heart rejects divine instruction, darkness gains territory.

The story teaches that:

This account is a call for every believer to guard the heart, submit to God, and cultivate righteousness.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY

  1. To understand the true reason behind Cain’s anger and rebellion.
  2. To learn the danger of offering God what He did not ask for.
  3. To understand how jealousy grows into hatred.
  4. To recognize the importance of heart posture in worship.
  5. To show how sin lurks at the door of the unguarded heart.
  6. To unveil the consequences of refusing God’s correction.
  7. To teach believers how to master emotions through obedience.
  8. To emphasize that righteousness provokes darkness to react.
  9. To build spiritual sensitivity to God’s warnings.
  10. To remind believers that God sees both offerings and motives.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CAIN’S SIN

  1. Disobedience (Genesis 4:7)
  2. Anger without surrender (Genesis 4:5)
  3. Jealousy (1 John 3:12)
  4. Hatred in the heart (Matthew 5:22)
  5. Unrepentance (Genesis 4:9–10)
  6. Rejection of divine warning (Genesis 4:7)
  7. Self-righteousness (Proverbs 14:12)
  8. Pride and stubbornness (Proverbs 16:18)
  9. Lack of love (1 John 3:11–15)
  10. Influence of the wicked one (John 8:44)

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. THE TWO FARMERS

Two farmers sowed in the same field.

One tilled with diligence, obeyed the farming instructions, and harvested abundantly.

The other ignored the instructions, sowed carelessly, and reaped little.

Instead of learning from his neighbor, he hated him for succeeding.

Lesson:

Jealousy grows where humility has died.

Instead of learning from the righteous, the wicked persecute them.

2. THE DARK ROOM AND THE CANDLE

A candle was lit in a dark room.

Instantly, the shadows reacted, shifting and retreating.

Darkness always resists light, not because the light is offensive, but because the light exposes.

Lesson:

Abel did not offend Cain; Abel’s righteousness exposed Cain’s wickedness.

Light irritates darkness.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, is there hidden anger in your heart?

Secret jealousy?

Offense toward someone God is blessing?

Are you resisting correction like Cain?

Repent now.

Don’t let sin crouching at your door become the master of your soul.

DEEP REPENTANCE BEFORE GOD

Lord, search my heart.

Remove jealousy, bitterness, rivalry, pride, and anger.

Deliver me from the Cain-nature; the nature that resents correction and envies the righteous.

Create in me a clean heart.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father,

I come before You acknowledging that I have sometimes acted like Cain; jealous, proud, offended, and resistant to Your correction.

Forgive me.

Cleanse my heart from all malice, envy, and hatred.

Deliver me from every seed of sin trying to enter my heart.

Help me to walk in righteousness like Abel.

I surrender my emotions, my motives, and my desires to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

HYMN

Take My Life, and Let It Be
Frances R. Havergal (1874)

1. Take my life and let it be
consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.

2. Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
swift and beautiful for Thee,
swift and beautiful for Thee.

3. Take my voice and let me sing
always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
filled with messages from Thee,
filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
every power as Thou shalt choose,
every power as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart it is Thine own;
it shall be Thy royal throne,
it shall be Thy royal throne.

6. Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for Thee,
ever, only, all for Thee.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Examine your heart today.

Is there anyone whose success makes you uncomfortable?

  • Pray for them.
  • Bless them.
  • Celebrate them.

Destroy jealousy before it destroys you.

DEEP REFLECTION

Cain’s story is a warning:

Sin grows in silence, and jealousy grows in secrecy.

The devil works in the unseen corners of the heart.

A heart that refuses correction becomes a home for darkness.

Let God search you today.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Child of God, you do not carry Cain’s nature;  you carry Christ’s nature.

The Holy Spirit in you empowers you to master anger, jealousy, and bitterness.

You are not a slave to emotion.

You are an overcomer.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Cain lived with the mark of judgment, but the redeemed live with the mark of Christ.

Guard your heart; eternity is shaped by the decisions of today.

Walk in love, for no murderer has eternal life abiding in him (1 John 3:15).

CLOSING DECLARATION

My heart is purified.

My spirit is aligned.

No jealousy, anger, hatred, or bitterness will find a place in me.

I walk in love, light, and righteousness.

I refuse the way of Cain; I embrace the path of Christ.

I overcome sin through the Spirit.

I am victorious, in Jesus’ name.

Amen.
