WHO WAS OF THAT WICKED ONE!
(A Devotional Study on Cain, the Warning of Scripture, and the Call to Walk in Light)
KEY VERSE
“Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother…” — 1 John 3:12 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The Apostle John draws our attention to Cain; the first murderer; and reveals a deeper spiritual truth:
Cain was not merely acting out of human anger; he was influenced by the wicked one.
His actions came from a heart disconnected from God, filled with jealousy, rebellion, and darkness.
Cain represents the life that rejects God’s standards, refuses correction, and hates the righteousness of others.
Abel represents the life yielded to God, offered in faith, walking in truth and humility.
The message is clear:
It is possible to have religious activity yet remain spiritually aligned with darkness.
Cain brought an offering, but his heart was wrong.
Cain spoke with God, but he refused to obey Him.
Cain had opportunity to repent, but pride ruled him.
John warns the believer:
Do not be like Cain.
Hatred, unforgiveness, jealousy, rebellion, pride, hypocrisy, and secret sin; all mirror the works of the wicked one.
But the beauty of the gospel is this:
You don’t have to remain in the pattern of Cain.
Through Christ, you can walk in the light.

ILLUSTRATIONS
1. THE TWO SEEDS
A farmer planted two seeds in the same soil.
One sprouted quickly but withered because its roots were shallow.
The other grew slowly but deeply and eventually bore fruit.
Lesson:
Cain had activity but not depth.
Abel had roots in God.
The difference between them was the heart behind the offering.
2. THE DARK ROOM
A man entered a dark room and searched for light.
As he fumbled, he kept stumbling over objects.
But when he finally switched on the light, everything became clear.
Lesson:
Cain lived in darkness, and darkness ruled him.
Light brings clarity, correction, and direction.
When you walk with God, the light exposes every hidden motive.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
Beloved, are there traces of Cain in your heart?
Hatred?
Jealousy?

Do you resist the voice of God when He corrects you?
The Spirit calls you today:
Reject the influence of the wicked one.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Tell God:
Lord, strip from me every seed of Cain.
Let not hatred live in my heart.
Purify my motives.
Break the grip of darkness in me.
I return fully to Your light.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
I confess that I have allowed attitudes, thoughts, or actions that do not reflect Your nature.
Forgive me for any hatred, jealousy, pride, or rebellion.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

HYMN
Yield Not to Temptation
Horatio R. Palmer (1868)
1. Yield not to temptation,
for yielding is sin.
Each vict'ry will help you
some other to win.
Fight valiantly onward;
dark passions subdue.
Look ever to Jesus;
He'll carry you through.
Chorus:
Ask the Savior to help you,
comfort, strengthen, and keep you.
He is willing to aid you;
He will carry you through.
2. Shun evil companions;
bad language disdain.
God’s name hold in rev'rence,
nor take it in vain.
Be thoughtful and earnest,
kind-hearted and true.
Look ever to Jesus;
He'll carry you through.
3. To him that o’ercometh
God giveth a crown.
Through faith we will conquer,
though often cast down.
He who is our Savior
our strength will renew.
Look ever to Jesus;
He'll carry you through.
TODAY’S CHALLENGE
Search your heart honestly.
Identify one attitude or habit that reflects the spirit of Cain.
Confess it, renounce it, and replace it with an intentional act of Christlike love today.
DEEP REFLECTION
Cain had opportunities; but he refused repentance.
Sin waited at his door; but he opened it.
God warned him; but pride stopped him.
What door are you opening?
What warning are you ignoring?
What bitterness are you nursing?
Choose the path of Abel; the path of righteousness and obedience.
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
You are not of the wicked one.
Darkness does not define you.
Christ has made you free; walk in the light.
You can overcome jealousy, anger, bitterness, and temptation.
You are called to be a light in a dark world.
ETERNITY IN VIEW
Cain’s story is a warning, but Abel’s is an invitation.
Only one path leads to eternal life:
The path of righteousness, faith, and obedience.
Live in such a way that heaven recognizes your sacrifice and your name is remembered among the righteous.
CLOSING DECLARATION
I reject every influence of the wicked one.

Amen.
