HOW CAN WE CLAIM THAT WE LOVE GOD?

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Dec 30th, 2025

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
HOW CAN WE CLAIM THAT WE LOVE GOD?

KEY VERSE:

“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar…”1 John 4:20

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The claim to love God is one of the most powerful confessions a believer can make.

Yet Scripture confronts us with a sobering test:

Love for God is validated by love in action, towards people, truth, and obedience.

Christianity is not merely a verbal declaration; it is a transformed life.

Loving God is not proven by church attendance, eloquent prayers, or spiritual language alone.

Jesus clearly taught that love for God is demonstrated through:

To claim love for God while walking in bitterness, injustice, hypocrisy, or disobedience is self-deception.

True love for God reshapes priorities, disciplines desires, governs relationships, and aligns the heart with God’s will.

Love that does not transform conduct is not biblical love, it is sentiment.

This devotional invites us to examine our hearts honestly:

Do our lives authenticate our confession?

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF LOVING GOD

  1. To live in obedience to God’s commands (John 14:21)
  2. To reflect God’s nature through love (1 John 4:8)
  3. To cultivate intimacy with God (James 4:8)
  4. To demonstrate Christ to the world (John 13:35)

ILLUSTRATIONS

 1. The Empty Ring

A man wears a wedding ring but lives as though unmarried.

The ring alone does not prove commitment, his actions do.

Lesson:

Claiming love for God without obedience is like wearing a ring without covenant faithfulness.

2. The Mirror and the Face

A person looks into a mirror, sees dirt on their face, but walks away without washing.

Lesson:

Hearing God’s Word without responding in obedience exposes self-deception (James 1:23–25).

A CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, it is possible to speak of love while living in rebellion.

God is calling us away from shallow confessions into authentic devotion.

Examine your heart:

  • Are there relationships poisoned by unforgiveness?
  • Are there commands you selectively obey?
  • Are there hidden sins justified by grace?

Today, God invites us back to sincere love.

DEEP REPENTANCE (HEART RESPONSE)

Lord, I confess that many times my words have been louder than my obedience.

I repent of loving convenience more than Your will, self more than sacrifice, and religion more than relationship.

Purify my heart and realign my love.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Father,

I come before You broken and sincere.

I repent of every false claim of loving You while living contrary to Your Word.

Cleanse me from hypocrisy, renew my heart, and restore my first love

Let my life testify of genuine love for You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

HYMN

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
George Matheson (1882)

Theme: God’s unwavering love that calls for full surrender in return.

1. O love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.

2. O Light that follows all my way,
I yield my flick'ring torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshine's blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.

3. O Joy that seekest me thru' pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow thru' the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless be.

4. O cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life's glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
