HIS WORD IS NOT IN US!

KEY VERSE

“If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin… He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.” – 1 John 1:6–7; 2:4-5 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

To say “His Word is not in us” is to admit a tragic reality: when the Word of God does not shape our thinking, actions, or desires, we live as empty vessels, religious in form but void of power. The Word of God is not just text on a page; it is life, spirit, and truth (John 6:63).

When His Word abides in us, we are transformed, strengthened, and guided. Without it, we stumble in darkness, fall into sin, and deceive ourselves. Jesus declared that abiding in His Word makes us true disciples and sets us free (John 8:31-32).

God’s Word is not meant to decorate our shelves or be quoted without conviction, it is meant to dwell richly in us (Colossians 3:16). When His Word is in us, it governs our thoughts, directs our steps, and transforms our hearts. But when His Word is absent, we fall into hypocrisy, compromise, and spiritual emptiness.

To claim Christ without His Word in us is to live in contradiction. The Word is the seed of new life, the light that guides us, and the sword that defends us. If His Word is not in us, our lives will reveal fruitlessness, deception, and defeat.

Characteristics of a Life Without God’s Word

1. Spiritual Darkness – Walking in ignorance and sin (1 John 1:6).

2. Deception – Claiming to know God but denying Him by actions (Titus 1:16).

3. Lack of Fruitfulness – No evidence of spiritual growth (John 15:5-6).

4. Instability – Easily tossed by false teachings (Ephesians 4:14).

5. Disobedience – Choosing man’s ways over God’s truth (Matthew 7:26-27).

6. Dead Faith – Empty profession without works (James 2:17).

7. Judgment Awaiting – The Word we reject will judge us (John 12:48).

Characteristics of a Life With God’s Word

1. Living by the Word – True disciples abide in His Word (John 8:31).

2. Obedience – Love for God is proven by keeping His commands (John 14:23).

3. Fruit-Bearing – The Word produces visible fruit (John 15:7–8).

4. Light in Darkness – God’s Word is a lamp and light (Psalm 119:105).

5. Strength Against Sin – The Word keeps us from sin (Psalm 119:11).

6. Truth Over Lies – Those without the Word walk in deceit (1 John 2:4).

7. Eternal Foundation – The Word endures forever (Isaiah 40:8).

ILLUSTRATIONS 

1a. The Empty Lamp

A group of travelers journeyed through a dark forest at night. Each carried a lamp.

One man’s lamp looked bright outside, but inside it had no oil.

When the darkness thickened, his lamp went out, and he stumbled and was lost.

Lesson: Without God’s Word dwelling richly in us, our outward religion cannot sustain us in life’s darkest moments.

1b. The Empty Lamp

A traveler set out at night with a lamp but forgot to put oil inside.

Though the lamp looked complete, it gave no light when darkness came.

Lesson: A Christian without the Word inside is like a lamp without oil, powerless when trials come.

2a. The Abandoned Manual

A young pilot received a flight manual but thought he was skilled enough to fly without it.

During turbulence, he panicked, forgetting the basic controls.

The manual could have saved him, but he ignored it.

Lesson: God’s Word is the manual for life.

To neglect it is to risk disaster; to embrace it is to soar securely.

2b. The Withered Tree

A farmer planted two trees.

One had deep roots reaching water and thrived;

The other had shallow roots and withered under the sun.

Lesson: Without God’s Word taking root in us, we wither under temptation and hardship.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, have you been carrying the name of Christ without His Word living in you?

Are your actions contradicting His truth?

Today is the day to repent and allow His Word to dwell richly in your heart and guide your life.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father,

I confess that I have neglected Your Word in my heart and allowed my life to be guided by self and the world.

Forgive me, Lord, for every act of disobedience.

Today, I repent and ask that Your Word takes root in me.

Cleanse me, guide me, and let me live in obedience to Your truth.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

REFLECTION SCRIPTURES 

1. John 8:31-32 – Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. [32] And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

2. Psalm 119:11 – Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.

3. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, [17] that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

4. Colossians 3:16 – Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

5. Matthew 7:24 – Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock.

6. James 1:22 – But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

7. Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

8. John 12:48 – He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE 

Spend at least 30 minutes today in God’s Word.

Memorize one verse and reflect on how you can live it out practically in your actions.

DEEP REFLECTION 

If God’s Word is not in us, then something else is ruling our lives, worldly wisdom, emotions, or fleshly desires.

Ask yourself:

What governs my daily decisions, the Word of God, or my own will?

CLOSING DECLARATION

The Word of God is alive in me.

I will not walk in darkness or deceit.

I am rooted in truth, empowered by grace, and guided by His Spirit.

From this day forward, I will let His Word dwell richly in me and shape every part of my life, in Jesus’ name.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Thank God for the gift of His living Word.

2. Ask for forgiveness for neglecting or disobeying His Word.

3. Pray for hunger and thirst for Scripture daily.

4. Ask for revelation and understanding as you study the Word.

5. Pray for grace to live out the Word practically.

6. Ask God to remove every worldly distraction keeping you from His Word.

7. Pray for His Word to bear fruit in your character and relationships.

8. Pray for boldness to declare His Word to others.

9. Pray for protection against deception and false doctrines.

10. Pray for steadfastness to abide in Christ, the Living Word, until the end.
