DEVOTIONAL TITLE: WHAT IS IN A NAME?

Identity, Authority, and Divine

KEY VERSE:

“You shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name.” — Isaiah 62:2 (NKJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE:

In today’s world, names often serve as identifiers—a way to distinguish one person from another. But in Scripture, a name was far more than a label. It reflected character, calling, and covenant.

God never uses names carelessly. Every name He gives or changes is a revelation of purpose.

In the eyes of God, a name is never just a name. It is a prophetic identity—a revelation of character, destiny, and relationship.

In Scripture, God often changed names to mark a divine turning point:

Abram ("exalted father") became Abraham ("father of many") — revealing God’s covenant promise. “father of many nations” (Genesis 17:5)

Sarai became Sarah ("princess") — shifting her from barrenness to fruitfulness.

Jacob ("deceiver") became Israel ("he who wrestles with God") — moving from manipulation to transformation. “one who wrestles with God” (Genesis 32:28)

Simon ("he has heard") became Peter ("rock") — establishing his role in the early church.

Saul became Paul — a sign of his transformation and mission to the Gentiles

A name from God doesn’t just describe who you are—it declares who you are becoming.

And even more powerful than your name is His Name:

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” — Proverbs 18:10

When you operate under His Name—Jesus—you carry His authority, His access, and His protection. There is healing in His name, salvation in His name, and identity through His name.

Your name—whether given at birth, changed by people, or whispered in prayer—matters. But the name God calls you is what defines your true identity.

God doesn’t call you by your shame, your sin, or your struggles. He calls you:

Loved. Redeemed. Chosen. Anointed. His.

ILLUSTRATION:

The Blank Name Tag

Imagine attending a global conference without a name tag. You’re unknown, overlooked, and unable to access certain areas. But then, the host gives you a new tag that says:

“Beloved. Authorized. Son/Daughter of the King.”

Suddenly, doors open. Security nods you through. People recognize your standing. Why? Because of the name you now carry.

That’s what God does—He doesn’t just rename you; He reclaims you.

The Name Tag

Imagine a conference where every attendee wears a name tag.

One man walks in with a tag that says: “Failure.”

Another says: “Not Enough.”

Another: “Addict.”

Then, the host walks in and begins removing their tags, replacing each one with a new label:

“Forgiven.” “Free.” “My Beloved.” “Purposeful.”

That’s what God does.

He doesn’t just change your name—He restores your story.

REFLECTION:

What name have you been answering to?

“Failure”?

“Forgotten”?

“Unworthy”?

What labels have people (or pain) placed on you?

What name do you hear in your thoughts that doesn’t align with God’s truth?

Who does God say you are?

He’s not calling you by your past. He’s calling you by your destiny.

God says:

“You are Mine (Isaiah 43:1). I call you Redeemed, Chosen, Holy, Loved, Child of God.”

PRAYER:

Father Lord, thank You for the power and purpose in the name You’ve given me.

I lay down every false label and accept the identity You’ve spoken over me.

Help me live boldly in the authority of Your Name—Jesus.

Thank You for knowing my true name.

Silence the voices that mislabel me and speak over me Your truth.

I receive the identity You have written over my life.

Help me walk in who You say I am—no longer who I was.

Revelation 2:17 – “I will give him a white stone with a new name written on it…”

John 1:12 – “To them He gave the right to become children of God…”

Acts 4:12 – “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.”

Isaiah 43:1 – “I have called you by name; you are Mine.”

John 10:3 – “The sheep hear His voice; and He calls His own sheep by name…”

Romans 8:15 – “You received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’”

CHALLENGE:

Write down every false name or label you’ve believed. Now, beside each one, write what God says about you in His Word. Declare His truth over yourself every day this week.

Write down three negative labels you've believed about yourself. Then, beside each, write the truth of what God calls you. Declare them daily. Your name, in God’s eyes, carries power, purpose, and promise.
