𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
WALKING LIKE CHRIST IS THE EVIDENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP

ANCHOR SCRIPTURE:

“He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” — 1 John 2:6

INTRODUCTION

A genuine disciple does not merely profess to know Christ; he follows Christ's example in daily living. Our conduct, character, speech, choices and relationships should increasingly reflect Jesus.

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

Discipleship is more than attending church, carrying a Bible or professing Christianity. It is a life that follows Christ.

To “walk as He walked” means to pursue His character, obedience, humility, love, holiness, compassion, forgiveness and submission to the Father.

Jesus said:

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

Our lifestyle should therefore provide evidence of our confession.

We will never become perfect like Christ overnight, but genuine disciples should demonstrate continuous spiritual growth and increasing Christlikeness.

The question is not only, “Do I call myself a Christian?”

The deeper question is:

“Can people see Christ in the way I live?”

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To follow Christ's example — 1 Peter 2:21
  2. To grow into Christlikeness — Romans 8:29
  3. To obey God's Word — John 14:15
  4. To demonstrate Christ's love — John 13:34–35
  5. To live as Christ's representative — 2 Corinthians 5:20

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS

1. Obedience

“If ye love me, keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

2. Love

“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples...” — John 13:35

3. Humility

“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 2:5

4. Holiness

“Be ye holy; for I am holy.” — 1 Peter 1:16

5. Forgiveness

“Forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32

ILLUSTRATIONS

1: THE FOOTPRINTS

A traveller walking through muddy ground leaves footprints behind him. Someone following closely can identify the path by those footprints.

LESSON:

A disciple should leave Christlike footprints wherever he goes, at home, at work, in church, in business and among friends.

If people follow our footprints, will they find Christ?

2: THE MIRROR

A mirror does not create the person standing before it; it simply reflects the person's image.

LESSON:

Our lives should increasingly reflect Christ. The closer we walk with Him, the more His character should become visible through us.

“But we all... beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image...” — 2 Corinthians 3:18

PERSONAL CALL TO REPENTANCE

Lord, forgive me for every area where my lifestyle has contradicted my confession of faith.

Forgive me for claiming to follow Christ while sometimes following my own desires.

Forgive my disobedience, pride, unforgiveness, impatience, compromise and lack of love.

Today, I turn away from every attitude and behaviour that does not represent Christ.

Lord Jesus, make my life a true testimony of discipleship.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Father, I humble myself before You.

Search my heart and expose everything that does not look like Christ.

Forgive me for every sin, compromise and disobedience.

Forgive me for the times my words have dishonoured You.

Forgive me when my attitudes have misrepresented Christ.

Remove pride, bitterness, hatred, selfishness, hypocrisy and spiritual lukewarmness from me.

Give me a heart that loves what Christ loves and rejects what He rejects.

Transform my character.

Transform my thoughts.

Transform my speech.

Transform my conduct.

Help me walk faithfully with Jesus every day.

Let my life become evidence that I truly belong to Christ.

Amen.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus,

I confess that I need You.

Forgive my sins and cleanse me from all unrighteousness.

I surrender my heart, character and lifestyle to You.

Help me to walk as You walked.

Teach me to love as You loved, forgive as You forgave, serve as You served and obey the Father as You obeyed Him.

Let my life bring glory to Your name.

Make me a genuine disciple, not merely a professing Christian.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

HYMN

More About Jesus

Author: Eliza E. Hewitt (1851–1920)
Music: John R. Sweney (1837–1899)

More about Jesus would I know,
More of His grace to others show;
More of His saving fulness see,
More of His love who died for me.

Chorus

More, more about Jesus,
More, more about Jesus;
More of His saving fulness see,
More of His love who died for me.

Why it fits: Genuine discipleship grows from knowing Christ more deeply and allowing His character to become visible in our lives.

TODAY'S CHALLENGE

Today, intentionally practice one Christlike quality:

  • Show love to someone difficult to love.
  • Forgive someone who offended you.
  • Serve someone without seeking recognition.
  • Refuse to participate in gossip.
  • Obey a biblical instruction you have been neglecting.

Let someone encounter Christ through your behaviour today.

DEEP REFLECTION

If people judge my Christianity by my lifestyle rather than my words, what will they see?

Will they see Christ?

Will they see love?

Will they see holiness?

Will they see humility?

Will they see forgiveness?

Or will they see the same attitudes and behaviours found in the world?

A disciple is not identified merely by what he says about Jesus, but by how closely his life follows Jesus.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Do not become discouraged because you are not yet where you want to be.

Christlikeness is a journey of transformation.

Every day, allow the Holy Spirit to shape you through God's Word.

When you fall, repent.

When you fail, return to Christ.

When you are weak, depend on His grace.

When you succeed, remain humble.

The goal is not to impress people with Christianity; the goal is to become more like Christ.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

One day, our earthly journey will end.

Our titles, possessions, achievements and human recognition will remain behind.

What will matter is whether we truly belonged to Christ.

“Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” — Hebrews 12:14

Therefore, let us live today with eternity in view.

Walk with Christ now so that you may reign with Christ eternally.

PERSONAL CLOSING DECLARATION

I declare that I belong to Jesus Christ.

My life will reflect Christ.

My words will reflect Christ.

My thoughts will reflect Christ.

My relationships will reflect Christ.

My decisions will reflect Christ.

I will walk in love, holiness, humility, obedience and forgiveness.

I will not merely profess Christ; I will follow Christ.

By God's grace, I will grow daily into His likeness.

My life shall be evidence of genuine discipleship.

I will finish my race faithfully and remain with Christ throughout eternity.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

2. Lord, deliver me from every behaviour that contradicts my confession of faith and make my lifestyle a true testimony of Christ, in the name of Jesus.

3. Father, fill me with Christlike love, humility, patience, forgiveness and compassion toward everyone around me, in the name of Jesus.

4. Lord Jesus, give me grace to obey Your Word even when obedience is difficult, costly or inconvenient, in the name of Jesus.

5. Father, help me remain a faithful disciple of Christ until the end of my earthly journey and preserve me for eternal life with You, in the name of Jesus.

I shall remain faithful until the end.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen!

WORDS OF TRUTH

“WALKING LIKE CHRIST IS THE EVIDENCE OF DISCIPLESHIP.”

A Christian is not merely someone who talks about Christ.

A disciple is someone who follows Christ.

Your Bible may be large, but your lifestyle must also speak.

Your prayers may be powerful, but your character must testify.

Your church attendance may be consistent, but your daily walk must reveal Jesus.

Christ must be seen in how you speak.
Christ must be seen in how you love.
Christ must be seen in how you forgive.
Christ must be seen in how you serve.
Christ must be seen in how you respond to adversity.

The world may not read your Bible, but it will read your life.

Therefore:

Walk like Christ.

Love like Christ.

Serve like Christ.

Forgive like Christ.

Obey like Christ.

Live for Christ.

“He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.” — 1 John 2:6

LET YOUR LIFE BE THE EVIDENCE THAT YOU ARE A DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST.
