THE COMPLETE WITNESS OF REDEMPTION: WATER AND BLOOD
KEY VERSE
"This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth." - 1 John 5:6 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The Apostle John emphasizes a profound truth: Jesus Christ did not come by water only, but by water and blood. This statement confronts incomplete understanding of salvation.
- Water represents His baptism, the beginning of His public ministry and identification with humanity.
- Blood represents His crucifixion, the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of mankind.
Many accept Jesus as a teacher (water) but reject His sacrifice (blood). However, salvation is not complete without both:
- The water speaks of cleansing and obedience.
- The blood speaks of redemption, atonement, and covenant.
When Jesus was pierced on the cross, blood and water flowed out, a divine confirmation that redemption is both spiritual cleansing and sacrificial payment.
This means:
- Christianity is not just moral reform (water),
- It is also atonement through sacrifice (blood).
Without the blood, there is no forgiveness. Without the water, there is no transformation. Together, they form the full testimony of salvation.

ILLUSTRATIONS
1. THE UNCLEAN VESSEL
A man had a beautiful cup but refused to wash it. He only poured clean water into it repeatedly. Eventually, the water became contaminated.
Lesson:
Without cleansing (water), even good things become corrupted. God cleanses before He fills.
2. THE PAID BUT UNCLAIMED DEBT
A debtor’s bill was fully paid, but he kept living like a slave because he never accepted the payment.
Lesson:
The blood has paid your debt, but you must accept it by faith to live in freedom.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
Return to the full gospel. Reject shallow Christianity. Embrace both the cleansing power of the Word and the redeeming power of the Blood.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Search your heart:
- Have you embraced only religion without transformation?
- Have you ignored the sacrifice of Christ while pursuing self-righteousness?
Turn fully to God today.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Lord Jesus,
I confess that I have not fully embraced Your truth.
Cleanse me by Your Word and wash me by Your blood.
Forgive my sins and make me whole again.
I surrender completely to You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

HYMN
There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood
William Cowper (1772)
Message: A powerful hymn emphasizing the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood and redemption from sin
1. There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel's veins,
And sinners, plunged beneath that Flood
Lose all their guilty stains.
2. The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;
And there hare I, as vile as he,
Washed all my sins away!
3. Dear dying lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransom'd church of God
Be saved, to sin no more.
4. E'er since, by faith I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be till I die.
5. Then, in a nobler, sweeter song,
I'll sing Thy power to save,
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue
Lies silent in the grave.
6. Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared
Unworthy though I be,
For me a blood-bought free reward,
A golden harp for me;
7. 'Tis strung and tuned for endless years,
And formed, by power divine,
To sound in God the Father's ears
No other name but Thine.
