KEY VERSE

"And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son." - 1 John 5:11 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

This powerful verse declares a foundational truth of the Christian faith: eternal life is not found in religion, good works, or human effort, it is found in a Person, Jesus Christ.

The phrase “this life is in His Son” means that life, true life, eternal life, abundant life, exists exclusively in Jesus. Outside of Him, there is spiritual emptiness, regardless of worldly success or moral effort.

Life in Christ is:

  • Given, not earned (grace, not works)
  • Spiritual before it is physical
  • Eternal, not temporary

To reject the Son is to reject life itself. To receive Him is to receive everything God offers, peace, purpose, forgiveness, and eternity.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand that eternal life is a gift from God (Romans 6:23)

  2. To recognize Jesus as the only source of life (John 14:6)

  3. To deepen faith in Christ alone for salvation (Acts 4:12)

  4. To reject self-righteousness and embrace grace (Ephesians 2:8–9)

  5. To grow in spiritual intimacy with Christ (John 15:5)

  6. To live consciously with eternity in view (Colossians 3:2)

  7. To walk in obedience as evidence of life in Christ (1 John 2:3–4)

  8. To share the message of life with others (Matthew 28:19)

  9. To abide daily in Christ (John 15:4)

  10. To experience abundant life now (John 10:10)

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE WHO HAVE LIFE IN HIS SON

  1. They believe in Jesus Christ (John 3:16)

  2. They walk in the light (1 John 1:7)

  3. They love others sincerely (1 John 4:7)

  4. They obey God’s commandments (John 14:15)

  5. They bear spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22–23)

  6. They hunger for righteousness (Matthew 5:6)

  7. They overcome the world (1 John 5:4)

  8. They have peace with God (Romans 5:1)

  9. They are led by the Spirit (Romans 8:14)

  10. They live with eternal assurance (1 John 5:13)

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Source of the River

A river cannot exist without its source. If disconnected, it dries up.

Lesson: Just as water flows from a source, life flows only from Christ. Without Him, the soul dries spiritually.

2. The Unplugged Device

A phone may be advanced, but without power, it is useless.

Lesson: Without connection to Christ, human life lacks true purpose and eternal value.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Turn away from self-dependence, sin, and misplaced trust. Life outside Christ is spiritual death. Come back to the only true source of life.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Search your heart: Have you truly surrendered to Christ, or are you relying on religion, effort, or appearances? True repentance involves a complete turning, heart, mind, and direction.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord Jesus,

I confess that I have lived apart from You. I repent of my sins and self-reliance. I believe that true life is found only in You. Come into my heart, cleanse me, and make me new. I surrender completely to You.

Amen.

HYMN

Rock of Ages
Augustus Toplady (1776)

A hymn emphasizing salvation through Christ alone, not human effort. It echoes the truth that life and refuge are found only in Him.

1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.

2. Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.

3. Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.

4. While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
