THE FOUNDATION OF DIVINE LOVE: OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S INITIATIVE

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The foundation of true love is not human effort, it is divine initiation. God did not wait for us to become perfect before loving us; He loved us in our brokenness, rebellion, and weakness. His love is unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal.
The statement “He first loved us” reveals a profound spiritual truth:
- Our love for God is a response, not a starting point.
- Divine love precedes human devotion.
- God’s love is not earned, it is received and reflected.
This love was demonstrated supremely through Christ’s sacrifice, showing that love is not merely words but action. When we truly understand this, our relationship with God shifts from obligation to affection, from duty to delight.
Loving God becomes natural when we deeply comprehend how much we have been loved. A heart that grasps divine love cannot remain cold, it burns with gratitude, obedience, and devotion.

1. The Loving Father and the Lost Son
A son leaves home, wastes everything, and returns in shame. Instead of rejection, the father runs to embrace him.
Lesson: God’s love is proactive and restorative. He loves before repentance and receives after repentance.
2. The Mirror and the Sunlight
A mirror cannot shine unless light shines on it first.
Lesson: We cannot truly love God or others unless His love first shines in our hearts.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
Return to the love of God. If your heart has grown cold, distracted, or distant, remember: God has never stopped loving you. Repent of indifference, pride, and self-reliance.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Search your heart:
- Have you taken God’s love for granted?
- Have you replaced love for God with routine religion?
- Have you withheld love from others?
Turn back with sincerity and humility.
PRAYER OF REPENTANCE
Lord,
I confess that I have not loved You as I ought. I have allowed distractions, pride, and self-centeredness to take Your place in my heart. Forgive me for taking Your love for granted. Restore in me a heart that truly loves You. Let Your love fill me again and overflow into every area of my life.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
You are deeply loved, beyond what you can measure or earn. God’s love is constant, unchanging, and ever-present. Even when you feel unworthy, His love remains.
ETERNITY IN VIEW
God’s love is not temporary, it is eternal. Those who receive and walk in His love will dwell with Him forever.
