THEY ARE OF THE WORLD!
(A Words of Truth Devotional Package)
KEY VERSE
“They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world hears them.” — 1 John 4:5
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
In this verse, the Apostle John draws a sharp line between those who belong to God and those who belong to the world system.
The “world” here refers not to the physical earth, but to its fallen systems, values, pleasures, and beliefs that stand in opposition to God.
Those who are “of the world” think, speak, decide, and act according to human wisdom, fleshly desires, and earthly approval.
Their voice is loud because it resonates with worldly minds.
But God calls His children to a higher standard; to be in the world but not of the world.
Your identity in Christ demands a lifestyle that reflects Heaven’s values, not the world’s trends.
To live set apart is not isolation; it is consecration.
It is walking in truth, holiness, compassion, and obedience, even when the world celebrates compromise.
This devotional urges you to examine your alignment; your values, desires, speech, relationships, ambitions, and reactions.
Do they echo Heaven or mirror the world?
Every believer must daily choose who shapes their life:
BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES
To understand the difference between worldly influence and godly influence.
To build discernment between the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of error.
To cultivate a lifestyle that pleases God above culture or peers.
To strengthen spiritual identity as citizens of Heaven (Phil. 3:20).
To reject worldly philosophies contrary to Scripture.
To renew the mind through the Word (Rom. 12:2).
To imitate Christ in speech, conduct, and character.
To develop spiritual courage to stand for righteousness.
To grow in holiness and separation unto God.
To shine as light in a world of darkness.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THOSE WHO ARE OF THE WORLD
Love the lust of the flesh, eyes, and pride of life — 1 John 2:16
Value human approval more than God’s approval — John 12:43
Their speech reflects worldly wisdom — 1 Cor. 2:14
Do not receive the things of the Spirit — 1 Cor. 2:14
Walk in darkness rather than light — John 3:19
Are hostile to God’s ways — James 4:4
Follow vain traditions rather than truth — Mark 7:8
Cannot please God because they walk after the flesh — Rom. 8:8
Reject the truth and embrace error — 2 Thess. 2:10–12
ILLUSTRATIONS
1. The Two Lamps in the Room
A room contained two lamps; one powered by electricity, the other by a battery.
The electric lamp shined brightly, while the battery lamp flickered weakly.
People entering the room naturally gravitated toward the brighter lamp.
Lesson:
The world often shines with temporary brilliance; fame, trends, money, and pleasure; but it is only battery-powered, destined to fade.
The light of Christ shines with eternal power.
Follow the light that lasts.
2. The Imitation Gold Chain
A young man bought what he thought was real gold because it looked shiny.
Weeks later it rusted and turned green.
He realized he had been deceived by appearance.
Lesson:
The world offers imitation glory that rusts.
God offers genuine life that never fades.
Judge by truth, not by appearance.
A CALL TO REPENTANCE
Beloved, examine your walk.
Are there habits, desires, relationships, or secret attitudes aligned with the world instead of the Word?
God calls you back to the purity of Christ.
Do not let the world shape you; let the Spirit transform you.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Let repentance reach your heart, not just your lips.
Lay down every worldly attachment.
Reject every compromise.
Ask God to purify your motives and restore your hunger for holiness.

I come before You, acknowledging that I have sometimes followed worldly desires and influences.
Have mercy on me.
Cleanse my heart from every impurity.
Renew my mind with Your truth.
Set my heart on things above and empower me to walk worthy of Your calling.
I receive Your forgiveness through Jesus Christ.
Amen.

HYMN
Take the World, but Give Me Jesus
Fanny J. Crosby (1879)
1. Take the world, but give me Jesus,
all its joys are but a name;
but his love abides forever,
through eternal years the same.
Refrain:
Oh, the height and depth of mercy!
Oh, the length and breadth of love!
Oh, the fullness of redemption,
pledge of endless life above!
2. Take the world, but give me Jesus,
sweetest comfort of my soul;
with the Savior watching o'er me,
I can sing, though thunders roll.
3. Take the world, but give me Jesus;
in his cross my trust shall be
till with clearer, brighter vision
face to face my Lord I see.
