NOT THAT WE LOVED GOD!

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Feb 19th, 2026

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
NOT THAT WE LOVED GOD!

KEY VERSE

“Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” — 1 John 4:10 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The greatest mystery of the gospel is that God loved us long before we ever thought of loving Him.

Humanity, by nature, is weak, wandering, sinful, self-seeking, and often rebellious.

Yet God’s love pursued us when we were unworthy, uninterested, and undeserving.

Not that we loved God” means:

  • Our love was never the starting point.
  • Our obedience was never the qualification.
  • Our righteousness was never the reason.
  • Our devotion was never enough.

God’s love is not reactive, it is proactive.

He did not wait for you to change before He loved you.

He loved you so you can change.

He loved you when you were broken so you can be healed.

He loved you while you were lost so you could be found.

God’s love initiates, sustains, preserves, and perfects every spiritual journey.

What you are becoming in Him today is rooted in what He decided about you long before time began.

This truth destroys pride, breaks condemnation, and births gratitude.

It reminds the believer:

“My walk with God is anchored not in my ability to love Him perfectly, but in His ability to love me unfailingly.”

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES OF THE TOPIC

  1. To understand the origin of divine love.

  2. To reveal that salvation starts with God’s initiative, not man’s effort.

  3. To cultivate gratitude for God’s unconditional love.

  4. To break condemnation rooted in human failure.

  5. To deepen trust in God’s eternal commitment to us.

  6. To highlight the sacrificial nature of God’s love in Christ.

  7. To inspire believers to love others selflessly.

  8. To strengthen confidence in God’s mercy and forgiveness.

  9. To correct wrong beliefs about earning God’s love.

  10. To ignite a renewed passion for worship and obedience.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. THE RESCUER IN THE STORM

A young boy fell into a raging river.

Unable to swim, he screamed helplessly as the water carried him away.

A passer-by jumped in, risking his own life, fought the current, and pulled the boy out just before he drowned.

The boy cried,

“Why did you save me when I couldn’t do anything for myself?”

The rescuer replied,

“I didn’t save you because you were strong, I saved you because you were in danger.”

Lesson:

God loved us not because we had strength, but because we needed saving.

2. THE FATHER AND THE PRODIGAL

A rebellious son demanded his inheritance and wasted it all.

But the father, seeing his son returning from afar, ran to him, embraced him, and restored him before a word of apology was spoken.

Lesson:

God’s love runs toward us before we run toward Him.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Beloved, God’s love is calling you home.

Turn away from the sins, habits, and distractions that pull you from Him.

His arms are open, not because you are perfect, but because His love is perfect.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Bow your heart and acknowledge where you have strayed.

Lay before God every area where you have failed to love Him in return.

Allow His love to wash away guilt and rebuild your devotion.

I acknowledge my sins, weaknesses, and shortcomings.

HYMN

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Charles Wesley (1747)

A timeless hymn celebrating the perfect and initiating love of God.

1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of Heav'n to Earth come down,
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown;
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,
Enter ev'ry trembling heart.

2. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit
Into ev'ry troubled breast;
Let us all in thee inherit,
Let us find thy promised rest;
Take away our love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.

3. Come, Almighty to deliver;
Let us all thy grace receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve thee as thy host above,
Pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
Glory in thy perfect love.

4. Finish, then, thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in thee;
Changed from glory into glory
Till in Heav'n we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise!
