THE TEST OF TRUE LOVE: LOVING GOD THROUGH LOVING OTHERS

THE TEST OF TRUE LOVE: LOVING GOD THROUGH LOVING OTHERS

KEY VERSE:

"If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" - 1 John 4:20 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

This scripture presents one of the strongest truths in the Christian faith: love for God is proven by love for people. It exposes hypocrisy and challenges believers to examine the authenticity of their faith.

Many claim deep devotion to God, through prayers, worship, fasting, and church attendance, yet harbor bitterness, unforgiveness, jealousy, and hatred toward others. The Apostle John calls such a person a liar, not to condemn but to awaken them to truth.

Why is this so serious?

  1. God is LoveYou cannot claim to know God and reject His nature.
  2. People are God’s ImageEvery person reflects God’s creation.
  3. Love is the Evidence of SalvationNot gifts, not works, but love.

Hatred may not always be loud, it can exist as silent resentment, avoidance, envy, or unforgiveness. But before God, it is still hatred.

Core Truth:

Your relationship with God is revealed in how you treat people.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand that love is the foundation of true Christianity (John 13:35)

  2. To align our hearts with God’s nature of love (1 John 4:8)

  3. To eliminate hypocrisy in our walk with God (Matthew 23:28)

  4. To cultivate genuine love for others (Romans 12:9)

  5. To practice forgiveness as Christ forgave us (Colossians 3:13)

  6. To reflect Christ in our daily interactions (2 Corinthians 3:18)

  7. To build unity in the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:3)

  8. To walk in obedience to God's command of love (John 15:12)

  9. To remove hatred, bitterness, and envy (Hebrews 12:15)

  10. To prepare our hearts for eternity (1 John 3:14)

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUE LOVE

  1. Love is patient (1 Corinthians 13:4)

  2. Love is kind (Ephesians 4:32)

  3. Love does not envy (James 3:16)

  4. Love does not boast (Philippians 2:3)

  5. Love is not self-seeking (1 Corinthians 10:24)

  6. Love is not easily angered (Proverbs 15:1)

  7. Love keeps no record of wrongs (1 Corinthians 13:5)

  8. Love rejoices in truth (3 John 1:4)

  9. Love bears all things (1 Peter 4:8)

  10. Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8)

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Bitter Worshipper

A man lifts his hands in church, sings passionately, and appears spiritual. Yet, he refuses to speak to his brother over a past offense. His worship is loud, but his heart is divided.

Lesson:

God values a pure heart over outward expressions. Worship without love is empty.

2. The Forgiving Servant

A woman was deeply hurt by a close friend but chose forgiveness and reconciliation. Her love restored not only the relationship but brought others closer to Christ.

Lesson:

Love has the power to heal, restore, and reflect God’s glory.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Examine your heart today.
Is there anyone you dislike, avoid, or secretly resent?
God is calling you to repent and return to genuine love.

DEEP REPENTANCE

THE FOUNDATION OF DIVINE LOVE: OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S INITIATIVE

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
THE FOUNDATION OF DIVINE LOVE: OUR RESPONSE TO GOD’S INITIATIVE

KEY VERSE

“We love Him, because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The foundation of true love is not human effort, it is divine initiation. God did not wait for us to become perfect before loving us; He loved us in our brokenness, rebellion, and weakness. His love is unconditional, sacrificial, and eternal.

The statement “He first loved us” reveals a profound spiritual truth:

  • Our love for God is a response, not a starting point.
  • Divine love precedes human devotion.
  • God’s love is not earned, it is received and reflected.

This love was demonstrated supremely through Christ’s sacrifice, showing that love is not merely words but action. When we truly understand this, our relationship with God shifts from obligation to affection, from duty to delight.

Loving God becomes natural when we deeply comprehend how much we have been loved. A heart that grasps divine love cannot remain cold, it burns with gratitude, obedience, and devotion.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand that God’s love is the origin of our salvation (Romans 5:8).

  2. To cultivate a responsive love toward God (Deuteronomy 6:5).

  3. To grow in intimacy with God through love (James 4:8).

  4. To reflect God’s love to others (John 13:34).

  5. To eliminate fear through perfect love (1 John 4:18).

  6. To live a life pleasing to God through love-driven obedience (John 14:15).

  7. To deepen gratitude for God’s grace (Ephesians 2:4-5).

  8. To recognize our identity as beloved children (1 John 3:1).

  9. To prioritize God above all else (Matthew 22:37).

  10. To remain rooted and grounded in love (Ephesians 3:17).

BIBLICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TRUE LOVE

  1. Sacrificial (John 3:16)

  2. Unconditional (Romans 8:38-39)

  3. Patient (1 Corinthians 13:4)

  4. Kind (Ephesians 4:32)

  5. Forgiving (Colossians 3:13)

  6. Selfless (Philippians 2:3-4)

  7. Enduring (1 Corinthians 13:7)

  8. Pure (1 Peter 1:22)

  9. Faithful (Lamentations 3:22-23)

  10. Transformational (2 Corinthians 5:17)

A son leaves home, wastes everything, and returns in shame. Instead of rejection, the father runs to embrace him.

Lesson: God’s love is proactive and restorative. He loves before repentance and receives after repentance.

2. The Mirror and the Sunlight

A mirror cannot shine unless light shines on it first.

Lesson: We cannot truly love God or others unless His love first shines in our hearts.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Return to the love of God. If your heart has grown cold, distracted, or distant, remember: God has never stopped loving you. Repent of indifference, pride, and self-reliance.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Search your heart:

Turn back with sincerity and humility.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Lord,

I confess that I have not loved You as I ought. I have allowed distractions, pride, and self-centeredness to take Your place in my heart. Forgive me for taking Your love for granted. Restore in me a heart that truly loves You. Let Your love fill me again and overflow into every area of my life.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

PERFECT LOVE: FREEDOM FROM FEAR

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Mar 18th, 2026

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
PERFECT LOVE: FREEDOM FROM FEAR

KEY VERSE

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” — 1 John 4:18 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

The Word of God reveals a profound spiritual truth: fear and perfect love cannot coexist. Fear is not merely an emotion, it is a spiritual indicator. It reveals a deficiency in our understanding, experience, and maturity in God’s love.

When the Bible says perfect love casteth out fear,” it refers to the fullness of God’s love, love that is complete, mature, and fully realized in the believer’s heart. This love is not human affection but divine love (Agape), revealed through Christ.

Fear, on the other hand, is rooted in:

  • Uncertainty about God’s character
  • Doubt about His promises
  • Anxiety about judgment, failure, or loss

Fear torments because it keeps the soul in bondage, paralyzed, restless, and unstable.

A believer who truly understands:

…will walk in boldness, peace, and confidence.

Perfect love produces:

  • Assurance instead of anxiety
  • Boldness instead of intimidation
  • Faith instead of doubt

Therefore, fear is not just something to manage, it is something to overcome through deeper intimacy with God.

  8. To deepen intimacy with God (James 4:8)

  9. To reflect God’s love to others (John 13:35)

  10. To prepare for eternity with confidence (1 John 2:28)

Return to Him and embrace His perfect love.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Acknowledge that fear is not just weakness, it is a lack of full surrender to God’s love. Lay down every hidden fear before Him.

FREEDOM FROM THE TORMENT OF FEAR

THE WORDS OF TRUTH DAILY DEVOTIONAL
Mar 17th, 2026

𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
FREEDOM FROM THE TORMENT OF FEAR
(Understanding and Overcoming the Torment of Fear through Perfect Love)

KEY VERSE

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.” — 1 John 4:18 (KJV)

DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE

Fear is one of the most powerful emotional forces affecting humanity. While certain fears may serve as warnings against danger, the kind of fear described in 1 John 4:18 is destructive. The Apostle John reveals a profound truth: fear brings torment.

The word torment implies distress, inner suffering, anxiety, and mental bondage. Fear creates internal prisons, people become trapped in worry, insecurity, and dread about the future.

Fear operates through uncertainty and unbelief, but God operates through love and faith.

The scripture teaches that perfect love casts out fear. This does not mean fear leaves gradually; it means God’s perfect love expels fear completely. The more we understand God's love, the less control fear has over our lives.

Why Fear Torments

  1. Fear creates anxiety about the future.
  2. Fear destroys peace of mind.
  3. Fear paralyzes faith and decision-making.
  4. Fear opens doors to doubt and unbelief.
  5. Fear disconnects us from confidence in God.

Many believers struggle with fear because they have not fully grasped the depth of God’s love and security in Christ.

When a person truly understands that:

fear begins to lose its grip.

Fear is one of the enemy’s most effective weapons because it weakens faith. Faith trusts God, but fear doubts God.

But God did not design His children to live in torment.

2 Timothy 1:7 declares that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.

When believers walk in the revelation of God's love, fear cannot dominate their hearts.

Perfect love produces:

The closer we walk with God, the less fear controls our lives.

BIBLICAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To reveal that fear brings torment and bondage (1 John 4:18).

  2. To understand the liberating power of God's perfect love.

  3. To strengthen faith in God’s promises.

  4. To break the hold of anxiety and worry.

  5. To help believers walk in spiritual confidence.

  6. To encourage trust in God's sovereignty.

  7. To renew the mind with truth.

  8. To cultivate boldness in prayer and faith.

  9. To build emotional and spiritual stability.

  10. To prepare believers to live victoriously.

ILLUSTRATIONS

1. The Child in the Storm

A child once became terrified during a violent storm at night. Thunder shook the house and lightning flashed through the windows. The frightened child ran into his parents’ room.

The father embraced the child and said, “You are safe because I am here.”

Within minutes the child slept peacefully.

Lesson

The storm did not stop, but the presence of the father removed the fear. Likewise, the storms of life may continue, but the presence of God removes the torment of fear.

2. The Prison of Imaginary Chains

A prisoner was locked in a cell with chains on his hands and feet. For years he believed the chains were real. One day a guard told him the chains had been unlocked long ago.

The prisoner tested them and discovered he had been free all along.

Lesson

Many believers live in fear even though Christ has already given them freedom. Fear often survives because of false beliefs, not reality.

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Fear often reveals deeper spiritual struggles such as:

God invites us to repent from fear-based living and embrace faith.

DEEP REPENTANCE

Repentance means turning away from:

It means surrendering every fear to God.

PRAYER OF REPENTANCE

Heavenly Father,

I confess that fear has often controlled my thoughts and decisions. I repent for doubting Your love, Your power, and Your promises. Forgive me for allowing anxiety to dominate my heart.

Today I surrender every fear, worry, and burden to You. Fill my heart with Your perfect love. Let Your truth replace every lie of fear.

Deliver me from tormenting thoughts and establish me in faith, peace, and confidence in You.

In Jesus' name. Amen.

REFLECTION SCRIPTURES

  1. Psalm 34:4 – God delivers from all fears.

  2. Isaiah 41:10 – God strengthens and helps His people.

  3. Joshua 1:9 – Courage comes from God’s presence.

  4. Psalm 23:4 – God’s presence removes fear.

  5. Matthew 6:25–27 – Worry cannot change the future.

  7. Hebrews 13:6 – The Lord is our helper.

  8. Psalm 56:3 – Trust defeats fear.

  9. Philippians 4:6–7 – Prayer replaces anxiety with peace.

  10. John 14:27 – Christ gives supernatural peace.

HYMN

What a Friend We Have in Jesus
Joseph Medlicott Scriven (1855)

Message of the Hymn:
The hymn reminds believers that every worry, fear, and burden should be brought to Christ in prayer because He cares deeply for His people.

1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!

2. Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!

3. Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge--
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield you;
you will find a solace there.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE

Identify three fears currently troubling your heart and intentionally surrender them to God through prayer and scripture meditation.

DEEP REFLECTION

Ask yourself:

  • What fear has controlled my decisions recently?
  • Do I truly believe God loves and protects me?
  • Am I trusting circumstances more than God’s promises?

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

God understands your struggles. His love is greater than your fears. No situation in your life is beyond His control. When you walk in His love, fear loses its power.

ETERNITY IN VIEW

Fear often focuses on temporary problems. But when we view life through eternity, we remember that God holds our future forever.

CLOSING DECLARATION

I declare that fear will not control my life. I walk in the perfect love of God. My heart is filled with faith, peace, and confidence in the Lord.

PRAYER POINTS

  1. Lord, deliver me from every tormenting fear in my life.

  2. Father, fill my heart with the revelation of Your perfect love.

  3. Let every anxiety and worry lose its power over my mind.

  4. Strengthen my faith to trust Your promises.
