𝕋𝕀𝕋𝕃𝔼:
BUT THAT HE LOVED US!
KEY VERSE
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us…” – Ephesians 2:4 (KJV)
DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE
The phrase “BUT THAT HE LOVED US!” is Heaven’s bold interruption in the story of our lives.
Scripture paints a clear picture of humanity, imperfect, inconsistent, sometimes rebellious, and incapable of saving itself.
Yet, standing between our past failures and our future hope is a divine interruption:
God’s love is not a response to our goodness; it is the reason for our hope.
Before we prayed, before we believed, before we changed, before we deserved anything, He loved us.
This love restored what sin damaged, rebuilt what guilt broke, and reopened doors we shut by our own choices.
It is this love that followed Adam after the fall, found Hagar in the wilderness, redirected Jonah from disobedience, restored Peter after denial, and saved Paul in his ignorance.
The same love is reaching for us today, not because we are perfect, but because His nature is Love.
“BUT THAT HE LOVED US!” means:
- When condemnation rose, His love justified.
- When darkness accused, His love redeemed.
- When weakness confessed, His love strengthened.
- When the enemy concluded, His love rewrote the verdict.
This is the message of grace:
We live today not because we deserved mercy, but because He loved us first.

ILLUSTRATIONS
1. THE BROKEN VESSEL
A potter once made a beautiful clay vessel.
One day, it fell and cracked.
Visitors told the potter to discard it.
Instead, he picked it up, filled the cracks with gold, and made it more beautiful than before.
Lesson:
God does not throw people away.
His love repairs, refines, and restores.
The cracks in your life are opportunities for Him to shine through.
2. THE RESCUED SHEEP
A shepherd noticed that one of his sheep wandered into a dangerous ravine.
Though the sheep caused its own trouble, the shepherd risked his life to bring it back.
Lesson:
Even when we go astray, God’s love reaches out, not to punish first, but to save, guide, and recover us.
CALL TO REPENTANCE
God’s love calls every heart to return.
He is not angry at your desire to come home.
He is waiting, arms open, ready to restore.
DEEP REPENTANCE
Take a moment to reflect.
Acknowledge where you have drifted, neglected prayer, ignored His warnings, compromised values, or surrendered to fear.
Ask Him to cleanse and renew you completely.

I come before You acknowledging my shortcomings.

HYMN
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
Charles Wesley (1747)
A timeless hymn celebrating the perfect and initiating love of God.
1. Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of Heav'n to Earth come down,
Fix in us thy humble dwelling,
All thy faithful mercies crown;
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love thou art;
Visit us with thy salvation,
Enter ev'ry trembling heart.
2. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit
Into ev'ry troubled breast;
Let us all in thee inherit,
Let us find thy promised rest;
Take away our love of sinning;
Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith as its beginning,
Set our hearts at liberty.
3. Come, Almighty to deliver;
Let us all thy grace receive;
Suddenly return, and never,
Never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
Serve thee as thy host above,
Pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
Glory in thy perfect love.
4. Finish, then, thy new creation;
Pure and spotless let us be;
Let us see thy great salvation
Perfectly restored in thee;
Changed from glory into glory
Till in Heav'n we take our place,
Till we cast our crowns before thee,
Lost in wonder, love, and praise!
